To our wonderful friends, family, and community,
We are sharing some bittersweet news today. After pouring our hearts, souls, and a lot of love into Ouma Bouwer Kitchen, we have made the difficult decision to close our doors.
Starting a food business as a side hustle is a labor of love, but the current economic climate and local regulatory landscape have made it incredibly tough to sustain. Between the heavy burden of ongoing red tape, high regulatory costs, continuous health department inspections, and the steep overhead of commercial kitchen rentals, the barriers for small startups are massive. Coupled with the relentlessly rising costs of meat and quality ingredients, and a slower-than-hoped response from the local South African community, the numbers simply no longer align.
While it is heartbreaking to wrap things up for now, our hearts are overflowing with gratitude. To every single person who ordered a pastry, shared a post, told a friend, or sent a message of encouragement—thank you. Your support, love, and empty plates meant the world to us and proved that the flavors of home truly connect people.
This isn't necessarily a final goodbye, but rather a "see you later." We hope to return in the future under better conditions, with a refined business plan, and in a climate where regulators offer more tangible support to small, independent side hustles without so much restrictive red tape.
Until then, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being part of our story and letting us share a piece of Ouma’s kitchen with you.
With so much love and gratitude,
