To our wonderful friends, family, and community,

We are sharing some bittersweet news today. After pouring our hearts, souls, and a lot of love into Ouma Bouwer Kitchen, we have made the difficult decision to close our doors.

Starting a food business as a side hustle is a labor of love, but the current economic climate and local regulatory landscape have made it incredibly tough to sustain. Between the heavy burden of ongoing red tape, high regulatory costs, continuous health department inspections, and the steep overhead of commercial kitchen rentals, the barriers for small startups are massive. Coupled with the relentlessly rising costs of meat and quality ingredients, and a slower-than-hoped response from the local South African community, the numbers simply no longer align.

While it is heartbreaking to wrap things up for now, our hearts are overflowing with gratitude. To every single person who ordered a pastry, shared a post, told a friend, or sent a message of encouragement—thank you. Your support, love, and empty plates meant the world to us and proved that the flavors of home truly connect people.

This isn't necessarily a final goodbye, but rather a "see you later." We hope to return in the future under better conditions, with a refined business plan, and in a climate where regulators offer more tangible support to small, independent side hustles without so much restrictive red tape.

Until then, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being part of our story and letting us share a piece of Ouma’s kitchen with you.

With so much love and gratitude,

In a South African home, the door is always open… and the kettle is always on.

At Ouma Bouwer Kitchen, we believe in:

🇿🇦 Tradition that smells like Sunday potjiekos
🇿🇦 Comfort that tastes like warm malva pudding
🇿🇦 Conversations that linger long after the last bite

Because in our culture, food isn't just about eating, it’s how we say, “welcome to our kitchen, where everything visit feels like a hug".

MEET THE OUMA BOUWER DREAM TEAM

Behind every great market stall… is an even greater team!

From flipping pancakes to fixing signs, charming customers to chasing stock, the magic of Ouma Bouwer Kitchen at Saffella Festival was all thanks to this incredible crew. Each one brought their own flavour (and flair!) to the mix, and we’re excited to introduce the legends behind the scenes:

Brandon
Second-year Architectural Studies student at St. Clair College. But around here, more fondly known as the Milkshake Maestro. If your milkshake brought you to the yard... he probably made it.

Kaley
The brilliant brain behind our “Little Kitty” charms and the artistic ninja behind our menu boards. If Kaley writes it, people line up for it. We’re convinced her markers are magical.

Jordan
Former part-time sushi chef and full-time Architectural Technologies student, Jordan is our resident perfectionist. He makes sure every single order gets the same love, care, and picture-perfect presentation. Honestly, the man assembles pancakes with surgical precision. We suspect he might secretly carry a ruler. Next week, he’s off on a new adventure to satisfy his appetite for wanderlust!

William
The real mover and shaker behind the scenes. He fetches, he carries, he fixes, and he figures things out. If there’s a crisis, William has already solved it. Probably with duct tape and a grin.

Tianna
She keeps the show running, the stock flowing, and somehow always knows where everything is. Tianna is routinely the first one to show up and the last one to call it a day. Whether it’s baking, serving, cleaning, planning, shopping… there is nothing too much for her. Calm in the chaos, reliable to the core, and always two steps ahead. We honestly don’t know how we’d function without her (and we don’t want to find out!).

And last but never least… Nicola
The heart, hustle, and spice behind Ouma Bouwer Kitchen. Nicola is the visionary who made her dream a reality, a proudly South African force of nature with a love for flavour, community, and beautiful chaos. She's the kind of person who'll roll up her sleeves, flip a pancake, fix a table leg, chat with a customer, and still have time to brainstorm the next big idea (usually while stirring a pot). Her energy is infectious, her standards are sky-high, and her passion? Absolutely unmatched.

Thanks to this team, the Saffella Festival was unforgettable. Stay tuned, we’re just getting started! 🇿🇦

CUSTOMER APPRECIATION POST

This one goes out to Kay & Jacob, the kind of customers every small business dreams of!

When we were just getting started, they were the first to order our made-for-sale pepper steak pies and left us our very first online review.

Over the weekend at Saffella Festival, they even drove all the way from LaSalle to Oakville just to support us. That’s the kind of love that keeps our ovens warm and our hearts full.

Kay & Jacob, thank you for believing in us from Day 1. We appreciate you!

If you snapped a pic with us or tried our treats, tag us! We’d love to see your happy faces and hear what your favourites were.

Over the next few days, we’ll be shining a spotlight on some special mentions, the faces, moments, and memories that made Saffella Festival extra sweet.
