You guys! I just found my new favourite dahlia! Again…. 😁
Araluan Leatrice was a variety I had last year, but it got so pounded by the May and June wind that it didn’t bloom until right at the end of the season. It had such a short amount of daylight at that point that it didn’t bloom quite right. So here we are! My first normal bloom of it, and I love it so so much!
This is an Australian beauty and she’s got style, frill, fluff, long stems, gold tips, and the most delicious pink tone. Maybe it’s a good thing I have at least 20 plants of this variety this year 🤷🏼‍♀️

Welcome to this part of my life called, “Things I Did Not Expect to Deal With in Saskatchewan.” Namely, 35 degree weather at the end of May. I thought I’d be dealing with frost before a heat wave!
Yesterday I checked on my cuttings that were planted and I said, “They’re cooked!! 😳😳” I thought I had lost somewhere around 1/3 of them due to this wild amount of heat. They looked so so bad. Anyway, I busted out the sprinkler and I have been cooling them off now at noon, 3PM and 7 PM, and it’s helping drastically. The ground is actually still moist a few inches below surface level so babies just need their leaves cooled off. Cooling them off in the evening is the biggest help so that they can absorb it all night without the sun scorching them to nothing. You really do learn something new every year, ya’ll!
I still have several hundred cuttings that need to be planted. Help.

Social media prettiness vs the reality of what I actually had to work with! 🤭
Here’s the story: Florelie Flamingo started blooming… in the basement… in a four inch pot…as a cutting… while reaching for the grow lights in order to bloom. I got a crazy long stem with a gnarly lean to it but a pretty little bloom nonetheless! I had to take her outside for photos even if she looks completely goofy in RL! She repeatedly tips over when a gust of wind hits her outside due to the top heaviness of the bloom. Girly is on the struggle bus but insists on blooming! I did my best to not show her goofy look for her portraits for my website. The moral of the story is, it’s pretty easy to hide the not-so-pretty side of things on social media, but that’s just not reality.
Should I call this my first bloom of the season even though dahlia season doesn’t start until end of July?? 😂

We worked until almost 10 last night and today it is all finished!
Unfortunately, my knees absolutely hate me and feel as if they could fall off at any given moment after crawling across 1,000 feet of uneven landscape fabric and stapling it down. Maybe I’m just getting old after all. 🤔
Anyway, who’s excited for a new dahlia season? Meee! 🙋🏼‍♀️

What do we do when it snows mid May? We hide in the basement and make more cuttings and avoid looking at the snow.
Anyway, this is what roughly three weeks in damp vermiculite gives you! I love big, happy roots!
If this snow doesn’t stop though, I’m about to hack on more plants and root more cuttings. Because what’s another 100 plants at this point anyway? 🫣

Happy Mother’s Day to all the fabulous mothers out there and especially to my own! Not only is she my mom, but also one of my best friends! She doesn’t get enough credit for supporting this crazy flower life I seem to have created. I’m pretty sure she hates it when I make these posts. 🫣
