You know what's coming? Peonies! You know what my favorite season of all the flower seasons is? Peony season! This beautiful flower symbolises so many things. Love, happiness, romance, prosperity, goodfortune, beauty and wealth. In greek mythology the peony is named after Paeon who was a student of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing. The story goes that Paeon, known as the healer of the gods, used a peony to treat a wound for Zeus. When Asclepius became murderously jealous of his pupil, Zeus saved Paeon by turning him into a peony flower.
So ya, I love them, coral charm and coral sunset are always the first varieties to bloom here. Did you know there are over 6500 varieties and counting! Yup, I need them all! Hope ya'll are ready for peony posts cause they are coming. Today is all about getting the last of the cut flower beds planted, spreading the piles of mulch, and putting out all of our water dishes for the birds; I use large plant pot saucers and simply lay them on the ground, it's the end of May and the ditches are already drying up. You will be rewarded, I promise. Especially if you lay them throughout the garden beds! Natural pest control is as simple as drawing the birds into your landscape.
We'll be finishing off the day with a pontoon ride to watch the Full Moon rise. My heart is Full.

I played marshgirl yesterday. The seasons first slap of the board rippling on the waters, gosh.
The river bank was dotted in woodland phlox and damesrocket. Purples and blues as far as the eyes could see. I met deer friends, turtle friends, and snake friends. A bald eagle soared over my head so closely that I could hear the force of his powerful wings flapping through the Sunfilled sky.
A monarch. A giant swallowtail and the most beautiful birdsong filled my heart with everything that seemed missing. Fergully moments. I pet moss, talked to whirlygigs, and cried with the gentle giants cut by the hands of man. I apologized and told them we aren't all the same.
Marshgirl days on wild waters bring me back to myself over and over again and will forever be my saving grace ~

I am struggling. Even with my hands covered in earth I am finding it hard to hold on to my joie de vivre. I loose myself in the gardens and the Wild in hopes of finding Her. Reconnecting with Her. Who is Her? Who am I. Why does it feel so hard.
Everything around me is beautiful. Everything around me is Love. It flourishes and grows everywhere the light touches✨️
It's nearly 9 in the evening and I can hear my beloved robins singing the most beautiful songs. They are grateful ones for the wee earth worms 🪱 I dug up while planting the dried floral beds. I'm thinking I need a little break from this version of me for a little while. Wild waters have been calling me for sometime and I'm thinking I might just reconnect with Her there~

Essex County has so many hidden gems. This one way looped trail conservation area is one of them~
The water dripplets were magical, the bird song was heavenly and the scent from the highbush cranberry permeated the air with a sweetness I cannot describe with words.

This is Phlox divaricata.
Wild blue phlox, woodland phlox, is a species of flowering plant in the family Polemoniaceae, native to forests and fields in eastern North America. The species name Divaricata means "with a spreading and straggling habit."
She grows 25cm-50cm tall and thrives in moist soil in dappled shade, making her the most perfect addition to woodland gardens. Her beautiful flowers range in color from the prettiest blues to violet to white with nectar that attracts butterflies, including swallowtail, skippers, gray hairstreaks and pigmy blues. She blooms in late Spring to early Summer. Oh, the flowers!!! Smell them! Put your hands on the Earth, get down on all fours, and breathe Her in. If heaven had a scent, it for surely would smell like Wild phlox.
She is a symbol of purity, innocence, and fertility of the Earth in indigenous cultures.
I was blessed to grow up surrounded by tall stands of shagbark hickory trees and wild woods. That's where I first met Her. That's where I fell in love with Her. She will forever be my most favorite Spring wildflower~

This is Geranium Maculatum, the wild geranium, spotted geranium, or wood geranium. She is a perennial plant native to woodlands in eastern North America, from southern Manitoba and southwestern Quebec. She thrives here under the canopy of Mama Maple and has spread her beauty all over the property. She can grow up to 2 feet tall. Her deeply lobed palmate leaves stay attractive all season long in the dappled shade and form the most lovely ground cover if given the freedom to be her wild self. Though she prefers partial shade, if your soil is rich, She can be just as happy in Full 🌞. And the flowers!!! Come Spring, she produces an abundance of bright lavender flowers that pollinators love. Solitary bees, bumble bees, and several species of butterflies are drawn to her pollen and nectar. Hummingbirds, too! She is the host plant for the white-marked tussock moth. Mourning doves also love the munch on the abundance of seeds she produces. Once she is done flowering, I like to go around and prune off the spent stalks to keep her a little less unruly. Does She grow in your gardens?

Last season I shared a few of my favorite late flowering Spring favorites and I've decided to do it again. Here She is in all Her glory. This is Alpine columbine, often referred to as the breath of God. Her flowers are considered to possess unusual beauty. Aquilegia alpina is a species of flowering perennial in the ranunculaceae family. She is native to the western and central alps. She is appreciated for Her beautiful blue to blue-purple flowers. She grows between 15cm-60cm tall. She likes full sun to part shade in well drained soil. Hummingbirds and bees adore her as much as I do. Her long stems make a great cut flower.
She represents courage, resilience, strength, tenacity, and elegance.
She has self seeded Herself all over the gardens and every Spring, Her majestic beauty takes my breath away~

I miss playing with flowers. I created this beautiful arrangement a couple of years ago with ranunculus from .
The gardens will be bursting with handfuls of blooms very soon and I cannot wait to make pretty bouquets.
Today calls for a full day of gardening and prepping the annual beds for planting. There's Sun and the earth is ripe and ready from the rains that fell last night and I cannot wait for muddy toes and soil drenched hands.

Rondeau adventures usually begin the same way every time, with the loading of the bikes in the truck and an hour or so long drive listening and singing along to Tyler Childers, smiling and chuckling with rosie cheeks.
You can feel the lightness fall over you as soon as you pull down the road. The sprinkling of wild beckons you on both sides and the urge to jump out and frolic is strong.
Backpacks full of snacks, books, water and gold paning equipment, haha ya, and we were off.
Bike riding through the forest has to be one of the most magical feelings, especially this one. This one used to belong to cars, but now, now it only welcomes you on foot or bicyclette. The forest has reclaimed the path and only little remnants of asphalt remain.
Oh the flowers. The spring ephemerals carpeted the forest floor as far as the eyes could see and everywhere the light touched was beautiful. One the bike, off the bike, on the bike, off the bike, there were pictures to take and friends to say hello to. There were Trillium, bloodroot, hepatica, violet, bellwort, meadow rue, wild geranium, may apple and more and my goodness the smile on my face was beaming as beautiful as they were. The birds, flashes of orange and yellow darted here and there and everywhere in between and their song echoing off of the Trees was Godlike.
The path leads to the beach.
Legs sore from riding we clambered our way down the path to the Lake.
I hunted for pretty stones and my Pete panned for gold. Haha, he did not find any, but my pockets were full and so was our coeurs.
Rondeau adventures are our most favorite. Have you been?
