DJ Chris Poynter specializes in weddings and corporate events due to high demand in these areas, but is no stranger to school dances, house-parties, bars, and clubs. so has a great deal of experience as a live sound technician and recording engineer. As well as running sound for numerous small acts, he worked at the Chief Sepass Performing Arts Theatre in Langley for five years, and later as a part-time radio host for two years at CFUV 101.9 FM in Victoria. During his time at CFUV, he also enhanced his skill set by completing the course MUS 306: Sound Recording Techniques at UVic.

This wedding at Olympic View Golf Club had the best of both worlds: A packed dance floor AND guests who could actually hold a conversation without shouting across the room! 🙌🏻

The wedding started with the ceremony out on the VERY windy green, but check out that crispy clear audio I managed to get with a high quality lapel mic and optimal speaker placement. 😮‍💨

Cocktail hour and dinner were lovely, and then it was time to partaaay!

I started the night with the PA turned up for the formal dances and early party tracks. Then it was time for silent disco mode, in partnership with : Guests could choose between three channels, switch back and forth whenever they wanted, and somehow still sing every word at the top of their lungs. 🤣 I was mixing the bride and groom’s requests on one channel, and the silent disco host had two Spotify playlists running in the other two channels; one with oldies and wedding classics, the other with 90s to now hits.

Later in the night the venue lights went down and the PA went back up for full on party mode! 🚨

The trees and gardens were still bare this past March, but love was definitely in the air at Hatley Castle, for my first wedding gig of 2026. 💍🏰 So much love and congratulations to Mark & Celeste, the sweetest couple ever. 🥰

Things have been a little quiet around my Instagram account lately because I’ve been enjoying some time off before the busy part of the year starts.

Having said that, here are a few clips from last week’s party: The Sangster Elementary School ‘Family Dance,’ which I have been DJing since 2015. I brought a pretty big light show for this one, and we had a mini rave at the end! 😁

My last event of 2025 was a mashup of my “day job” as an elementary school music teacher, and my “night job” as a DJ & AV production service:

Each year I take my Gr. K-5 choir to the City of Colwood Christmas Light-Up event, along with the other elementary school choirs from our municipality; however, this year the rain and wind were so intense on the day of the event, that it was cancelled. Needless to say, we had a LOT of disappointed children.

I decided that this annual event was important enough that I should try to throw something together myself, as the City of Colwood told me they would not be rescheduling their event. The Commons in seemed like a suitable location, so I reached out to who put me in touch with Sara & Ashleigh at . With only a few days remaining until Christmas break, they wholeheartedly accepted my idea to host an event, and threw their support behind it by offering up the space, sponsoring two shelters from , and hiring to supply enough hot chocolate for up to 300 choir students.

I’m not sure how I pulled it off on top of my teaching job and DJ gigs, but within 2 days I secured an event permit from the city, special event insurance, the commitment of four school choirs, a face-painter, and a plan based on hope.

As soon as I finished teaching, on the day of the event, I raced down to The Commons with my choir risers and sound & lighting equipment; and within 3 hours, everything was ready to go. It must have been a Christmas miracle because the skies cleared (aside from a few sprinkles), hundreds of people turned out, and the event went incredibly smoothly.

Along with the people I already mentioned, a special thanks also goes out to Derek D., Matt S., and Matt H. for helping me with setup, takedown, and equipment transportation; for volunteering her face-painting services; and everyone else who showed support by being there!

It was an insane amount of work to pull this thing together and to shoulder so much responsibility, but it was well worth it to see the excitement radiating from the kids who got the performance chance they deserved. 🎶
