To afters or not to afters?
There have been recent discussions led by Matt Dell, Victoria City Councillor about a bylaw from 2001, which supported late-night dance clubs as an approved zoning use in heavy industrial areas.
Our stance on this is pretty clear! Late-night clubs provide a safe, controlled space for nightlife to continue without pushing people into unsafe, unregulated environments. Instead of forcing the party underground or onto the street, we should instead support those spaces that prioritize security, harm reduction, and responsible operations. Allowing the city to have oversight on these spaces provides assurances of collaboration to all community stakeholders. All around the world including in Canada these spaces are normal. Let’s rethink the way we approach late-night culture in Victoria!
