"I would like to nominate [ L ]. She is working as a nurse at VGH and tirelessly looking after a patient who has been infected with Covid 19. She’s risking her life to save the life of another person. Thank you [ L ] for all you do."
DR, Burnaby BC
I was very proud to deliver these flowers today. Nurses are essential workers, and I've reflected alot on this during
💐My friends work in forestry as essential workers too. In a job largely unaffected by the pandemic, they provide the fiber that becomes toilet paper. It's not hard to draw lines from many jobs to the needs we as a community have. The 'essential' rating justifiable.
💐 I drove by VGH on the way to [ L ]'s house, imagining life as a nurse, preparing to possibly give my life for a paycheck. What is a day on the job really like? the challenges? How did my patients contract Covid? Do Nurses want to remove the lockdown restrictions? a 30min drive leaves time for curiosity!
💐 But when I got to [ L ]'s, all of those questions evaporated. There were well-used toys all over the small yard, little kids' shoes at the door and a home-made heart in the window. [ L ]'s husband answered the door with a giant grin that could melt an iceberg. "Is she here?" I asked. He replied "She is sleeping."
💐 It hit me hard! This is what Essential Worker really means. This is the real front line of this pandemic. These people, this family, everywhere are doing this everyday. Long shifts, missing partners, kids, friends & extended family all to provide critical 24/7 care to people they don't know. And taking significant personal risks to do it. The whole family takes the risks.
💐This is bigger than toilet paper you don't actually need to ration, or repairing pipes that break. This is life-threatening care and I wonder if we're doing enough to show appreciation. I bang pots at 7pm with my neighbours...it feels awesome when I do. But now I know there is more I can (have to) do.
💐 So thank-you [ L ] and all of the nurses who work so hard to keep us safe/alive. National Nursing Week may be ending but my awareness of your hard work and what 'essential' really means is just beginning @ Vancouver, British Columbia
