🚣 Happy Dragon Boat Festival 🚣! �

Did you know the Dragon Boat Festival is rooted in the story of Qu Yuan, one of the beloved figures in Chinese history?�

Over 2,000 years ago, Qu Yuan served as a trusted advisor to the King of the State of Chu during China's Warring States period. Known for his wisdom, integrity, and deep concern for his people, he advocated for reforms and alliances that would strengthen his kingdom.

However, political rivals spread false accusations against him, leading to his exile from the royal court. During his years in exile, he wrote some of China's most celebrated poetry, expressing his love for his country and his hopes for its future. When Qu Yuan learned that the capital of Chu had fallen to an invading army, he felt powerless to save his nation, and chose to end his life by throwing himself into the Miluo River.

Upon hearing the news, people rushed out in their boats to search for him. To prevent fish from disturbing his body, they threw balls of sticky rice into the river. Over time, these acts evolved into two of the Dragon Boat Festival's most recognizable traditions:

🚣 Dragon boat races — inspired by the villagers racing across the water in search of Qu Yuan.

🥢 Zongzi (粽子) — sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, inspired by the rice offerings made to honour him.

Today, the Dragon Boat Festival is more than a celebration of food and sport. It is a tribute to loyalty, integrity, courage, and the enduring belief in standing by one's values, even in difficult times.

Victoria Day is more than just a long weekend, it marks an important part of Canada’s history and is recognized as Canada’s oldest continuing public holiday. Originally established in 1845 to celebrate the birthday of Queen Victoria, the holiday later became associated with celebrating the official birthday of Canada’s Sovereign.�

Today, Victoria Day has also become known as the unofficial start of summer, bringing communities together through family gatherings, outdoor activities, and celebrations across the country. Wishing everyone a wonderful and relaxing long weekend! ☀️😎

Today’s anniversary celebration was a meaningful milestone, with sunshine, community, and shared moments. As we reflected on the Garden’s journey over the past four decades, we were reminded that the garden is a living bridge connecting cultures, stories, and generations ❤️

We’re so grateful to be part of this milestone, and to contribute in our own way to preserving and sharing this cultural heritage for generations to come.

Last Friday, we had the pleasure of welcoming a wonderful group of influencers for a special preview of the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden 40th Anniversary celebration 🥳 It marked our third influencer event at the Garden, and it’s always special to see how the experience transforms with the seasons and each unique occasion.

This time, we stepped back in time to 1986 to rediscover the history, culture, and community that shape the Garden today.

From the guided Garden tour and tea ceremony, to hands-on cultural experiences like the Suzhou embroidery workshop and Qing Tuan tasting, the program was designed to invite participants into the serene atmosphere of an authentic Ming Dynasty Suzhou-style garden, while offering a deeper connection to Chinese culture ❤️
