International Dance Day feels like a good reminder of how much there is to learn from each other through dance.

Sharing a moment from Phase 2 of Rhythms of Africa with .friendship , curated by , led by Munkie Ncapayi.

We shifted from mbira and marimba into South African rhythms, vocal work, and gumboot dance and yeah… gumboot will humble you real quick 😂

It’s a lot of coordination, timing, and being fully present. Definitely no hiding in the back.

The focus wasn’t performance, it was presence. Meeting the work with curiosity, learning it in real time, and feeling how rhythm, voice, and movement all connect.
Big thank you to Munkie for leading with so much energy and clarity, and to Jacky and the African Friendship Society for creating the space.

ONE STRETCH FRIDAY: SHOULDER OPENER

This one’s for the shoulders and chest, especially if you’re on your phone or at a desk a lot.

Clasp or reach your hands behind your back if you can and open through the chest.
Stand tall. Breathe deep. Let the front of the body open up.

This series was supposed to wrap in March… but we’re keeping it going to keep everybody limber for limbo!

What are fans doing between plays? 👀
Because it’s definitely not just waiting around.

Vancouver Canucks fans were locked in for this one: cheering, reacting, and having a time with the limbo.

Those in-between moments are where the fun really is.
People laughing, getting into it, and just enjoying the moment!

While we were in downtown Calgary in February, we stumbled into , a creative drop-in space right in the heart of the city.

Fish couldn’t help himself and showed a few of the staff the limbo pose 😂 (had to).
Big love to for the warm welcome. Always good to see spots like this holding it down for the arts downtown. If you’re in Calgary, make sure to go check them out!

This one’s for the backs of the legs! The key for mobility, balance, and protecting your lower back.

Hinge at the hips, keep a soft bend in the knees, and ease into it.

Feel the stretch, then roll up slow.

Thanks for moving with me.

This one’s for the upper back and shoulders, where we hold a lot of tension.

Wrap your arms around yourself, drop your chin slightly, and gently round through the spine.

Give yourself a big hug. You’ve earned it!

Breathe into the stretch. Slow and steady.

Dal Palmer and I attended the Black Brilliance in BC event last month, and the energy was solid.

We appreciated hearing leaders share their journeys, and connecting with folks in the community we hadn’t met before.

Shoutout to DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society for always celebrating excellence and opening new doors.

I recently took the Rhythms of Africa series with the .friendship curated by and it’s been adding something real to my limbo practice.

The first four classes were led by Kurai Mubaiwa—Zimbabwean musician and cultural practitioner, deeply rooted in Shona traditions.

We learned mbira (thumb piano), marimba, and sang traditional Shona songs together. As a limbo dancer, it deepens how I listen, and changes how I move with the music instead of just moving through it.

These classes have made me more aware of the rhythm I already carry in my body, and how closely it’s connected to what I’m hearing.

Big respect to Kurai for holding such a focused, welcoming space. You could feel how much the music means to him and that energy translated every week.

If this sounds like something you’d like to try, follow .friendship for updates on upcoming sessions.

This one’s for the sides of the body. Often overlooked, but key for posture and mobility.

Standing side stretches help open up the ribs, lengthen the torso, and create more space to breathe and move freely.

Reach tall. Bend gently. Switch sides.

Grateful to the Burnaby School District for creating meaningful opportunities for students to experience culture in motion.

From Byrne Creek Community School to Edmonds Community School, students leaned in, asked questions, had fun, and got LOW.

Thank you to Principals Ben Pare, Guy Hamilton, and District Principal Beth Applewhite for bringing this experience to your schools. Limbo carries history and resilience, and when students understand its roots, it connects on a whole other level.
