Dance West Network: connecting artists and communities in motion

On September 30, Dance West Network marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to recognize and reflect on the ongoing legacy of residential schools, and, through our love of dance, arts and culture, to continue to work toward the development and strengthening of relationships with Indigenous artists and organizations.

Consider supporting artists and organizations with a donation:

Stir has also put together a list of Vancouver-area events that various art organizations have in the next coming days, including Films for Truth and Reconciliation at the Polygon Gallery, Sugarcane Film Screening at Pacific Theatre, and the Museum of North Vancouver’s pay-what-you-can program. On National Indigenous Peoples Day we celebrate the pride that First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities take in their rich heritage, traditions and cultures.

As a Network of artists and presenters from around the province, we're happy to share info about a presentation from the Northern Indigenous Arts Council: Yun Ts’uwhut’loo: Braiding the Land by Raven Spirit Dance.

This evening of performance is also a public expression of sovereignty and cultural resurgence, rooted in the unceded traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh. It is both a celebration and a call to witness the stories carried through generations.

On SATURDAY, JUNE 7 join artists Aurore Liang (QC), Judith Colibri, Isaac Gassawanga/Elite Squad, Jhoely Triana, and Sarah Kennedy - all part of Dance West Networks' professional development program DADAO Des Arts Dehors/Arts Outside which supports dance artists creating work for outdoors/alternative settings - as they present short performances in a roving presentation of their work in the spaces throughout Alliance Francaise Vancouver's new building. This format invites guests to engage with the work up close and move through the environment as part of the artistic experience. Come for one performance or come for all - each moment offers a unique encounter with contemporary dance in alternative spaces.

FRIDAY, JUNE 6 check out the wonderful diversity of dance in the City of Surrey!

Join artists B's Dancing Roses, Linden Tsz Yin Choi, Ria Goel, Vidya Kotamraju,
The Paul Tavai-Latta Polynesian Dancers & Co, Mia Pelayo and Puneet Singh, as they share brief performances of their work, plus a performance by Punit Singh (an alumni from Dance West Network's 2024 Re-centering/Margins Residency) who will also facilitate a public talkback with all of the artists. From Bollywood to Bharatanatyam, from Polynesian to improvisational contemporary dance, come discover the diversity of Surrey dance artists!

Calling all babies, caregivers and friends and come out to the Baby Rave: a Dance Party for Wee People and their Grown Ups!

Put on your old track pants and join us for a “baby rave”. Make new friends with this morning dance party that gives families a space to let loose and jump to the beat. With free snacks, it's a fun-filled environment for the very young, and the young at heart. Come together with your friendly neighbourhood library and the Dance West Network. Ages 0-5 with their grown-ups!
