I don’t know who’s luckier…
the children who grow up around animals,
or the animals raised by kind children 🤍

Chickens are a lot smarter and more interesting than most people realize once you spend a little time watching them closely 🐔
🌿 I’ve found chickens each have their own little personalities, and you really do start noticing who is bold, calm, curious, or bossy
👀 They are much more aware of their surroundings than people give them credit for
🐣 If you keep chickens, you probably already know they form social bonds and can get stressed when the flock changes
🥚 I always think they’re a good reminder that backyard animals are not just useful, they’re fascinating too
🌞 Happy chickens usually need more than food and water, they also need clean space, shade, fresh air, and room to scratch around
💛 The more I learn about them, the more I appreciate just how much is going on in that little coop
They may look simple at first glance, but chickens are full of surprises.

This week at The Barnyard Classroom Primary Learning Pod, we dove deep into the sweet science of maple syrup!

We began with a KWL inquiry chart, activating prior knowledge and building curiosity.
• K – What we Know: Students shared their background knowledge about maple trees and syrup.
• W – What we Wonder: Before researching, they generated thoughtful questions to guide our learning.
• L – What we Learned: After reading informational texts and discussing the process, students recorded new understandings about how sap becomes syrup.

We then strengthened our literacy skills by writing simple sentences about the maple syrup process — tapping the tree, boiling the sap, and the many delicious ways it can be enjoyed. 🍁🥞

Of course, every good scientist needs hands-on investigation… so we became taste testers! Students sampled four different types of maple syrup and graphed their favourites using a pictograph, integrating data collection and visual representation into our math block. 📊

Later, we brought math outdoors. Using measuring tapes, students calculated the diameter of maple trees on our property to determine if they were mature enough to tap. Maple trees must be at least 10–12 inches in diameter before they can be safely tapped for sap. 🌳

From inquiry-based research and structured writing to data graphing and real-world measurement, this week beautifully connected literacy, math, science, and nature-based learning — showing students that meaningful education happens when curiosity meets hands-on experience.

How Chicks Are Formed

Chicks are formed from a fertilized egg after about 21 days of incubation, which involves fertilization, cell division, and development of an embryo within the egg's protective membranes and shell. The process begins when a s***m fertilizes an egg cell, forming a zygote that begins to divide and grow in a germinal disc. The yolk provides nourishment, while the albumen and membranes offer protection, moisture, and nutrients for the developing embryo. After about 21 days of consistent warmth (either from a hen or an incubator), the chick uses its "egg tooth" to break through the air sac and then the shell, a process called hatching.
