🇨🇦⛳ Canada Games 2025 is Almost Here! 🎉

As you may have noticed, a brand new Canada Games sign is proudly on display as you enter Bally Haly! We’re beyond grateful to be chosen as the host course for this incredible event and can’t wait to welcome athletes, coaches, and fans next week!

Here are a few important details as we get closer:
📅 Setup Begins – Starting Saturday, August 16th, the Canada Games crew will begin setting up for the event. Expect lots of activity on the property with the arrival of trailers, tents, and other equipment.

🅿️ Parking – The Games crew will be occupying 1/3 of the North parking lot, so please use the South lot as your first option for parking throughout the week.

🏌️‍♂️ Course Access – Our South Course will be closed until 11:30am throughout the tournament. (No early morning play during the week.)
The North Course will be open as usual.

👀 Spectators Welcome – If you’d like to watch the event, you’re more than welcome! Please just be mindful of all event rules while on the property.

🍽 Clubhouse Access – During the tournament, the lounge side will be closed; however, the restaurant side will remain open.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping make this event a great success.

Let’s get ready to cheer on some incredible athletes!

As everyone is aware, our weather conditions continue to be hot and dry, and our golf courses are extremely vulnerable to fire. To be proactive, starting tomorrow, Thursday, August 14th, we will be implementing a temporary smoking ban on the entire property, with the exception of designated areas.

Smoking will only be permitted in three designated areas: Starter Huts, Canteen areas, and selected Clubhouse areas. Water buckets will be provided in these areas to extinguish ci******es.

Thank you in advance for helping keep our property safe! We also want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the firefighters, first responders, and volunteers working tirelessly on the front lines to keep our communities safe. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by these fires, and we hope for rain and relief soon.

Until then, please take care and stay safe, everyone. ❤️

Bally Haly Golf Club

Bio:Originally born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, I was raised in rural Newfoundland, spending my early years in Musgrave Harbour and Lower Island Cove. At age 8, my family moved to St. John’s, and it’s been home ever since. I studied Business Administration at Memorial University from 1995 to 2000, and I now work as the Commercial Business Development Manager at Munn Insurance.

My love for golf started in 1985 during a memorable round with my dad at Twin Rivers. That day sparked a strong junior golf career, where I had the chance to represent Newfoundland on several provincial teams and was proud to receive the Canadian Junior Achievement Award in 1990.
In 2010, I stepped away from the game to focus on my career and settling into a new home in Bay Bulls with my wife, Susan. But in 2018, I found my way back to the course, rejoining Bally Haly with a fresh passion—and I’ve been all in ever since.

1. What is your full name?
Christopher Wade Rooney

2. Where were you born?
I was born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia and today I live in Bay Bulls.

3. What would people be surprised to learn about you?
Honestly, not much, I’m pretty much an open book.

4. Are you a member of a golf club and what club? Who do you regularly play golf with?
Yes, Bally Haly. We have such a wonderful golf family at Bally Haly, I try and play with anyone that will have me.

5. What's your favorite course that you have played?
My favorite course that I have played is Paradise Canyon in Lethbridge, AB. Like most golfers I would love to play Augusta National.

6. Where and when did you start golfing?
Captain’s Hill, Pippy Park around 1986

7. Can you (briefly) tell us your most memorable golf experience
My first hole-in-one with Steve Emberley on hole #4 at The Wilds in 2003.

8. Can you (briefly) tell us your funniest golf experience.
Watching my friend walk off of a South Florida golf course and give his full set of clubs away to a stranger in the parking lot. Wasn’t his best round 😉.

9. What is your greatest golf accomplishment?
Winning the 2025 Mid-Amateur & Amateur championships at The Wilds.

10. How do you like to relax?
I love to fish, play guitar and sip on a morning coffee at Ragged Beach in Witless Bay.

11. What is your most treasured golf possession?
My 2025 NL Amateur trophy.

12. What is your best/worst quality on the golf course?
My best quality is my intuition & decision making while my worst is a lack of focus at times.

13. What 3 professional golfers would complete your dream foursome for a round of golf? What 3 Newfoundlanders, past or present, would you like to join you at a dream dinner?
That would have to be Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy & Justin Rose. For my dinner I would love to sit down with Gordon Pinsent, Brad Gushue and Ron Hynes.

14. Have you ever had a hole-in-one? When and where?
I have been fortunate to have had three: the first on Hole #4 at The Wilds in 2003, the second on Hole #15 at North Palm Beach Country Club in Florida in 2007 and the last on Hole #12 at the old Bally Haly Golf Course in 2022.

15. What is your best score ever? When and what course?
It would be a 63 the old Bally Haly Golf Course.

16. What is your favorite/least favorite golfing hole on a Newfoundland & Labrador golf course?
My favorite is Hole #10 at Humber Valley Resort while my least favorite is Hole #11 at Terra Nova.

17. What do you think is the worst rule in golf and how would you change it?
Not getting relief from a fairway divot, it is ‘literally’ ground under repair. The change shouldn’t be the standard unplayable rule as this might change the angle to the hole. Within a foot of the divot would work fine.

18. What advice would you give to a young golfer starting to play golf today?
Learn proper etiquette and don’t get too comfortable playing with the same group every round. Mix it up, it’s good for you.
