Bio: I’m 18 years old from Paradise, NL and my home club is Bally Haly Golf & Country Club. I’ve been active on the competitive golf scene since 2023. I’m also a certified youth golf coach.
I recently graduated from Mount Pearl Senior High. In addition to golf I also love hockey where I am a goalie and a referee. I recently finished my minor hockey career with the Mount Pearl Senior High Huskies and Paradise Warriors.
Recently, I accepted a golf scholarship and committed to St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida where I will compete in the NAIA with the St. Thomas University Bobcats while completing a degree in Sports Administration starting this fall.
1. What is your full name?
Kethan Kenneth Hooper
2. Where were you born? Where do you live today?
I was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland. I still live in Paradise but I am getting ready to move to Miami to attend St. Thomas University.
3. What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I am also a hockey goalie. I just finished my minor and high school hockey career.
4. Are you a member of a golf club and what club? Who do you regularly play golf with?
I’ve been a member at Bally Haly for 3 years. I have a regular group that I have been playing with for a long time. Lucan Meade, Sam Fisher, Chris Browne, and Josh Meade.
5. What's your favorite course that you have played? What course would you like to play anywhere in the world?
My favorite course that I have ever played would have to be Oakfield in Enfield, Nova Scotia. I’m looking forward to my trip to Scotland next summer with my University golf team. We will be playing Carnoustie and possibly St. Andrews!
6. Where and when did you start golfing?
I started at the age of 7 at Clovelly’s junior day camp.
7. Can you (briefly) tell us your most memorable golf experience.
When I made a downhill slider from 25ft to shoot my personal best.
8. Can you (briefly) tell us your funniest golf experience.
Whenever our group plays together there are always hilarious moments. There are too many to pick just one.
9. What is your greatest golf accomplishment?
Probably winning Bally Haly Junior Club Championship last season on one of the windiest days of the year.
10. How do you like to relax?
Practicing my putting stroke is how I spend my time relaxing.
11. What is your most treasured golf possession?
My new pair of custom FootJoy shoes. They are the colors of my University golf team and feature my last name and a grey cancer ribbon in memory of my buddy J. D. Trainor who passed away from brain cancer.
12. What is your best/worst quality on the golf course?
My best quality would probably be my distance off the tee while my worst would probably be my ability to close out a good round.
13. What 3 professional golfers would complete your dream foursome for a round of golf?
Tiger Woods, Rory Mcilroy, and John Daly.
14. What 3 Newfoundlanders, past or present, would you like to join you at a dream dinner?
Bob Cole, Ron Hynes, and Mike Lynch.
15. Have you ever had a hole-in-one? What is your best score ever? When and where?
I have not had a hole-in-one yet but hopefully soon! My lowest ever score was 72 last summer at the Bally Haly South Course.
16. What is your favorite/least favorite golfing hole on a Newfoundland & Labrador golf course?
My favorite is definitely number #12 at Humber Valley. I love the way the ball flies against the mountains. My least favorite is hole #5 at Grande Meadows. It takes away my distance as it makes me hit an iron off the tee.
17. What do you think is the worst rule in golf and how would you change it?
The worst rule is definitely not getting relief from a divot in the fairway, everyone should be entitled to a grips length of relief from a divot.
18. What advice would you give to a young golfer starting to play golf today?
Enjoy every shot. It’s not always about your score, but about trying to get better every day. Have fun and never forget why you started playing golf!
