The great volcanic island of Krakatau (or Krakatoa) has added some friends to itself in the last few weeks. One of them is visable on this photo from the European Space Agency!
Krakatau is one of the most powerful volcanoes on our planet, with its 1883 eruption being a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 6. This is over 10 times more powerful than the eruption of Mount St Helens in 1980.
In contrast, the largest VEI in the geological record is the Oruanui eruption of New Zealand 25700 years ago, which wiped out the North Island of New Zealand and left ash 5000km away... in Antarctica.
