One more way platypuses are unusual mammals: they don't have stomachs. Their esphagus connects directly to their intestines. It's believed that this was an evolutionary adaptation. Platypuses have a simple diet that doesn't require the chemical breakdown the stomach provides. It's believed they once had stomachs, but that they eventually evolved out.
