Gutless Wonders

One more way platypuses are unusual mammals: they don't have stomachs. Their esphagus connects directly to their intestines. It's believed that this was an evolutionary adaptation. Platypuses have a simple diet that doesn't require the chemical breakdown the stomach provides. It's believed they once had stomachs, but that they eventually evolved out.

We think of ourselves as being much more advanced than our caveman predecessors, but there's at least one thing they did better than we do: digest. Their digestive tracts were longer, making them better able to break down foods with a lot of bulky fiber. Their bigger molars helped them chew foods into more digestible bits as well.

Profit in P**p

Today we pick up dog p**p because it’s good manners, and, in most places, the law. But in Victorian England, people did it because it was profitable. Leather makers relied on the enzymes in f***s to tan the leather, and children often earned money by selling them the dog p**p they found on the streets.

Deja Poo - Why Can't You Digest That Innocuous Kernel of Corn?

While soluble fibre found in foods such as beans, nuts, and carrots forms a gel-like substance when mixed with stomach secretions, the insoluble fibre contained in oat bran and corn on the cob passes through the GI tract largely unchanged. Humans lack the necessary enzymes to digest certain components of plant cell walls. These insoluble fibres are therefore responsible for pieces of corn and other food particles to appear in your stool, just as they did before you ate them.

Doo You Know? Flushometer Invented in 1906 by William Elvis Sloan, the Flushometer is a device that uses pressurized water to reduce the recycle time between flushes. It is still used in public lavatories today.

A flushometer is a metal water-diverter that uses an inline handle to flush tankless toilets or urinals. It was invented by William Elvis Sloan and is a product of the Sloan Valve Company.[1]

Rough Road - Butt Hole Road was an actual street name in Conisbrough, England. Needless to say, this provided both an embarrassment and a nuisance for residents, who had to deal with constant jokes and tourists. In 2009 they raised 300 pounds to pay for a new street sign, changed the name to Archers Way.

Why is a ship toilet known as the “head” when the “tail” seems much more fitting? Because “head” was a nautical term denoting the front of a ship, which is where toilets were usually located, so they could be cleaned by the splashing water.

Did you know??

The world’s smallest toilet is so tiny you need a microscope set to magnification 15,000X to see it. Named “Chisai Benjo” (Japanese for “small toilet”), it was created by Takahashi Kaito, who etched it out of a silicon substrate using an ion beam.
