We often get asked about the SOCAN fee. The hall is primarily responsible for paying SOCAN fees, as it is the venue that is licensed to have music played there. The venue can then choose to pass this cost on to the client hiring it, which may include the DJ's fee, but the legal responsibility lies with the location.

Responsibility breakdown

Hall/Venue: The venue is legally responsible for holding the necessary SOCAN license because it is a public performance space.

DJ: The DJ is responsible for the performance of the music, but not the licensing of the music's public performance.

Client: The client is responsible for paying whatever the venue charges, which may include a portion of the SOCAN fee.

What this means in practice

The venue pays the license fee to SOCAN.

The venue may charge the cost of the license to the person or group renting the space.

The client (who hires the DJ and the hall) is the one who ultimately pays for the license.

The DJ is not responsible for paying the SOCAN fee, but they should confirm that the venue they are working at is licensed to avoid any issues.

We often get asked will you be my DJ or do you send someone else?

The main difference is that a single-op DJ service is a one-person operation where the owner is the DJ, ensuring personalized service from initial contact to the last song. In contrast, a multi-op DJ service is a company with multiple DJs, allowing them to book many events simultaneously, though it can lead to different people handling different stages of the planning process, and the DJ you work with initially might not be the one who performs at your event.

Single-op DJ service

Personalization: You work directly with the same person from the first conversation to the last song.

Consistency: The DJ who plans your event is the same one who executes it, creating a more personal connection.

Flexibility: Often has more flexible hours and can meet clients at a convenient location.

Availability: Can only book one event per day, so popular DJs may be harder to secure.

Multi-op DJ service

Scalability: The company can handle multiple events at once, making them a good option for busy dates or larger bookings.

Potential for different points of contact: You might work with one person for booking and another person for planning and the actual performance, though some multi-op companies do offer a consistent point of contact.

Backup and resources: Companies often have more equipment and backup DJs available in case of an emergency.

Less personal: The DJ who performs might be a subcontractor who has not been involved in the planning process.
