Supporting, Inspiring, and Championing Women Living in the Arts

Vision:
The Heliconian Club, one of the oldest associations of its kind in Canada, brings together women living and working in the arts and letters, plays an active role in wider community initiatives, and maintains an outreach program. The Toronto Heliconian Club is the oldest association of its kind in Canada, founded in 1909 to give women engaged in arts and letters an opportunity to come together to discuss, enjoy, and further interests (in art, dance, drama, humanities, literature. The Club still holds to its original purpose, but is evolving—men attending many of its public programmes. The beautiful Heliconian Hall (the Club's epicentre) has charitable status and is a popular venue that can be rented for a variety of non-member happenings from weddings to business gatherings.

Heliconian Hall in Yorkville hosts LUMINOUS, a exhibition of fourteen women photographers. Eight performance artists engage with the spirit of selected photographs, a delightful form of synergy. This interaction of art disciplines is called 'ekphrasis.'

Hel's Belles: October 24, 2026

Once again, our Heliconian composers generously share their riches in a varied program including Jana Skarecky’s “What Draws Us Together” for cello and clarinet and a set of Heliconian dances for string quartet by Kye Marshall.

Shades of Autumn: November 21, 2026

A concert of chamber works including the Brahms Clarinet Quintet, Schubert’s Piano Trio in Bb Major and a new piece for bassoon and piano by club member Kye Marshall.

Come To The Cabaret: March 20, 2027
Join Heliconians this March for a cabaret style concert. Enjoy an assortment of snacks and drinks to bring to your table while you take in Broadway hits, party pieces and theatrics. Come to the Cabaret (old chum)!

Music For Planet Earth: April 24, 2027
The Heliconian Music Section annually pays tribute to our planet Earth, with a program dedicated to the health of our environment. This program will include “We Make the Air” for mezzo-soprano and string quartet by Kye Marshall.

FREE Extra Concert: Mary Rezza Memorial Student Recital: May 15, 2027

Mary Rezza (1927-2000) was a long-standing member of the Toronto Heliconian Club, a noted collaborative pianist, teacher and vocal coach who organized the first Heliconian student recital in 1991. Heliconian teacher/members continue to bring their students together for an annual program in memory of this esteemed member. Come and share the excitement of students of all ages and levels performing in this congenial environment.

PRIMARY Art Exhibition and Sale

From June 27th to September 2nd, 2026

The Heliconian's summer show is called “Primary”, which is open to so many multiple interpretations. There will be a juried component, with all the chosen pieces being featured in a special Heliconian group show at the Propeller Gallery in November. Thanks to our Visual-Artist-in-Residence, Doris Purchase, for arranging this unique opportunity.
