Hallelujah...He is Risen and He Reigns Forevermore!
A Young Man From Nazareth
On this Resurrection Sunday, we are reminded that God always comes through in extraordinary ways—even when we think all hope is gone.
Weeks before last year’s Jesus in the City Parade, our float designer, Marvalyn Whyte, faced a challenge: finding someone to portray the resurrected Jesus on the throne she had so carefully prepared. Despite her efforts, no one came forward.
Still hopeful, she decided to bring the costume along on the day of the parade, trusting that somehow, the right person would appear.
Determined, Marvalyn prayed for God to provide the right person, someone who would embody Jesus. She walked around Queen’s Park, scanning the crowd, until her eyes fell on a young man in deep conversation. Something about him caught her attention.
She approached him and asked if he would be willing to portray Jesus on the throne, pointing toward the float.
He hesitated, then said, “Let me talk to my mom.”
A few moments later, he returned with his mother. The woman’s face lit up as she spoke: they were from Israel. She had been encouraging her son to come to the parade with her, and though he was initially reluctant, he eventually agreed. Now, the opportunity for him to play Jesus felt extraordinary—like something meant to be.
Marvalyn was overjoyed. The thought of someone from Israel, the birthplace of Christ, portraying Jesus made the moment feel even more poignant.
As she placed the gold crown with rhinestones on the young man’s head, the morning sunlight caught the rhinestones, sending brilliant rays of light shimmering in every direction. It was as if the moment had been touched by something divine. People quickly gathered, asking to take photos with him.
At the end of the parade, the young man approached Marvalyn. With quiet sincerity, he said, “This was a very moving experience for me. Not only am I from Israel… but I’m from Nazareth.”
Marvalyn was speechless. She had prayed that God would send the right person to portray Jesus. God sent a Jewish man from Nazareth.
Marvalyn’s heart swelled. What had begun as a stressful search had turned into something unforgettable—something, in every sense, marvellous.
Happy Resurrection Sunday
