With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we’ve been thinking about the moments that make the Mill feel like home 🏡

The dinners that turn into long conversations. Afternoon tea shared with someone special. Celebrations on the patio, evenings in the Print Room Bar, and wedding days that become part of a family’s story.

For over a century, the Old Mill has had the privilege of being the backdrop to moments big and small. And while the seasons change, it’s the memories made within these walls that make this place what it is.

Meet Julia & Adam, today’s couple in our Real Weddings at Old Mill series 🤍

Their story began at a baptism, where they ended up at the same table after the service. Julia’s mom took one look at Adam and announced to everyone that her daughter was single while looking directly at him (Moms really do know how to get the ball moving).

Adam asked for Julia’s number and went straight to phone calls on his drives home from work. Two weeks of conversations later, Julia wondered if he was ever going to ask her out. When he did, they discovered they’d imagined the exact same first date: board games at a park or the beach. By then, it already felt like they knew each other.

The proposal came just before Christmas. While Julia was photographing three swans on a snowy lakeshore, Adam got down on one knee. She started saying yes before he could finish asking. Those swans later found their way into the wedding stationery and décor 🦢

Julia never had a wedding planned out in her head. They just knew they wanted something intimate, meaningful and true to them. Old Mill was the only venue they toured. Julia had imagined an outdoor ceremony, until they walked into the Chapel. Walking down, its aisle gave her goosebumps, and she immediately knew this was the place.

On May 30, they married there. Their pastor flew in from Vancouver, and Julia and Adam chose to see each other for the first time that day at the ceremony. Seeing Adam waiting for her, both of them tearing up, became Julia’s favourite moment of the day.

At their Guildhall reception, the little details carried so much meaning. Their florist had done Julia’s grandparents’ wedding 50 years earlier, and each guest received a handwritten letter. With two Italian families coming together, a generous four-course meal was essential, too.

Julia told us she once wondered how a wedding could really be the happiest day of someone’s life. Then she walked down that aisle toward Adam and understood 🤍
