The Story Behind BatCave North

BatCave North didn't start as a concept, it started on a dance floor.

My very first DJ set was at Club Zambukie, an underground Toronto venue that opened its doors over Victoria Day weekend in May 1984. I played from 8pm Sunday straight through to noon the next day, a full marathon set, and that night became the beginning of everything. Zambukie was one of the venues that helped launch Toronto's post-punk, new wave, and early gothic-rock scene, spinning import vinyl sourced from shops like the Record Peddler, and I was lucky enough to be part of that from the very start.

From there I carried that sound and that scene through clubs like Twilight Zone, Klub Domino, and Catwalk, always chasing that same underground energy. BatCave North grew directly out of that vibe, a theme night born from the same music and the same crowd that first pulled me into DJing over 40 years ago.

There's something fitting about where BatCave North lives now. The Wych has that same raw, underground feeling Zambukie had back in 1984, and stepping into it feels less like starting something new and more like coming back to where it all began.

Toronto's goth scene is very much alive today, with a great community of DJs and events keeping it thriving. BatCave North is simply my contribution to that, my own personal style shaped by 42 years behind the decks, bringing together the old classics that started it all with newer tracks that keep the sound moving forward.

Hello gothlings and gothesses,

Tonight is the night. Since our last BatCave during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, when we danced together over Zoom from our own living rooms, this gathering has been on pause in person. Tonight, for the first time since then, The BatCave North returns to a real dance floor.

This one is a trial run. A chance to see if there's still a place for this particular night, alongside all the other wonderful goth and alternative events keeping the scene alive in this city. If tonight goes well, I'd love to make this a regular gathering again.

That's really up to you.

If you've ever enjoyed a BatCave night in the past, or you're simply curious to check out something new, your presence tonight would mean a great deal. It's how we'll know whether to keep going.

I'll be honest, it's been a while since I've done this one, so there's some excitement mixed with a few nerves. But I'm looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting some new ones too.

THE BATCAVE NORTH
Hello gothlings and gothesses,

Some nights leave a mark. This was one of them. 🦇

This is me, deep in a BatCave North set at Nocturne, years ago. That banner behind me, I made that myself, hand painted, back when doing it yourself was just part of running a goth night.

I still remember nights like this one, the heat of the room, the crowd pressing in, the feeling that for a few hours, this was the only place in the city that mattered.

This Saturday, we bring that feeling back, banner and all. This time it's professionally printed, but the spirit behind it hasn't changed one bit.
