Afrique Like Me Presents: The Listening Bay in collaboration with Toronto History Museums curated by Lady Donli
This exhibit / listening experience will be open to the public from Wednesday August 26 to September 26th at the Fort York National Historic Site.
This listening room does not attempt to tell the complete history of African music. Such a history would be impossible to contain within a single exhibition. Instead, it invites visitors to listen across regions, tracing how music is continually shaped through exchange, resilience, and innovation. Beginning in West Africa and moving through East, Central, North, and Southern Africa, the featured genres reveal a continent defined not by a single musical identity, but by centuries of movement, encounter, and creative transformation. From Indian Ocean trade routes and trans-Saharan exchange
to urban centres and contemporary global networks, African music has always evolved through connection.
