Rhythm Open Air returns July 25 for the second edition of our three-part summer series exploring the full spectrum of contemporary dance music in an open-air setting.

For the second chapter, we dive into the raw energy of electro, ghetto tech, and club music — spotlighting artists pushing the boundaries of contemporary dance music through innovation, experimentation, and deep-rooted connections to underground culture.

Leading the soundtrack for the day is Detroit legend DJ Godfather, one of the founding architects of ghetto tech and a pivotal figure in shaping the sound of dance floors across the globe. Joining him are two of the most exciting voices in contemporary club music: New York’s Kush Jones and Brooklyn’s AceMo, artists whose work seamlessly connects house, techno, electro, jungle, footwork, and beyond into distinctly modern club experiences.

Representing Toronto are local favourites 999ADJ and Chinelo, two selectors helping define the city’s next generation of underground dance music culture.

Together, the lineup reflects the spirit of Rhythm Open Air: bringing together global innovators and local talent for a full-day gathering centered around discovery, community, and the future of the dancefloor.

Rhythm celebrates Pride on June 5 with a two room showdown featuring Tammy Lakkis, the Detroit-based master of leftfield, sexy, and pummeling musical mesmerism, and a whole host of Toronto’s finest in the q***r underground.

With a voice described by NPR as “sheepish soul” and a bold electronic production style, Tammy Lakkis is no stranger to holding nuance. Raised between Michigan and Ontario and currently based in Detroit, Michigan; the artist has carved a unique pathway for herself since the launch of her debut EP Notice, gaining traction throughout North America and beyond for her eclectic hardware live sets. With the titular single securing a spot on NPR’’s “100 Best Songs of 2021” list, Notice–released through Shigeto’s Portage Garage Sounds label–is currently on its third vinyl pressing. Her music floats seamlessly between playful vocal house and ferocious bass-heavy bangers and often winks at her ancestral nostalgia for Arabic percussion and melodies.

A Tammy DJ set could be described as off-center, funky, risky, strange, playful and ever-evolving. A natural storyteller, her music fluctuates between extremes, genre, and temperature. With a locally beloved Detroit weekly Monday Is the New Monday at Motor City Wine serving as a regular playground for experimentation, Tammy has developed a wide arsenal of sounds, sometimes easing into the night with ambient weirdness and psychedelic percussion while other weeks find her tearing the roof off with shrieking acid and electro. A master mixer of both vinyl and digital, Tammy’s sound cannot be tied to a single genre but is one that exists in negative space, weaving together different worlds with unsuspecting threads.

A spellbinding roster of local favourites featuring Dunaway, Hiroki, Jaw Jones, Marnigurl, and TJ Traxx round out this very special night.
