Germany just grew more potatoes than anyone knew what to do with. 🥔 After the country's largest potato harvest in 25 years, a single farmer near Leipzig was left holding 4,000 tonnes that nobody would buy once a planned sale collapsed. Instead of letting the surplus rot, a Berlin newspaper teamed up with the search engine Ecosia to launch a citywide giveaway, opening 174 free pickup points across the capital.

Families showed up with backpacks, buckets and handcarts to collect potatoes for winter meals. Soup kitchens, schools, churches and even Berlin Zoo joined in, and two truckloads were sent to Ukraine. According to The Guardian and Berliner Morgenpost, the giveaway shows how fragile food markets can be even when a harvest succeeds. Sometimes abundance itself becomes the problem. At 82 years old, Marie Wilcox faced a painful reality. She was the last fluent speaker of Wukchumni, a Native American language from California. She knew that if she did nothing, the language her ancestors had spoken for generations could disappear forever.

Instead of giving up, Marie decided to save it.

She had never used a computer before, but that did not stop her. She taught herself how to use one and began an incredible journey. Every day, she sat at her keyboard, carefully typing every Wukchumni word she could remember. She wrote each word, its meaning, and how it should be used. It was slow and difficult work, but she never lost hope.

For nearly seven years, Marie worked with patience and determination. She wasn't doing it for fame or money. She wanted future generations to know where they came from and to keep their culture alive. She believed that every language carries stories, traditions, and the wisdom of the people who speak it.

Her hard work led to something truly special. Marie created a 6,000-word Wukchumni dictionary, giving her language a future in written form. She also helped make audio recordings so people could hear the correct pronunciation and the beautiful sound of the language. Thanks to her efforts, students and family members could begin learning Wukchumni again.

Marie Wilcox passed away in 2021, but her work continues to inspire people around the world. Because of her dedication, Wukchumni did not disappear with her. Instead, it became a gift for future generations.

Her story reminds us that one person really can make a difference. Even without modern skills or special training, Marie proved that love for your culture and determination can achieve something extraordinary. She refused to let an entire language be forgotten, and because of her, the voice of Wukchumni will continue to be heard for years to come.

Before online shopping, Christmas lived downtown.

The sidewalks were packed with families bundled in wool coats, carrying paper bags from Sears, Woolworth’s, JCPenney, and Montgomery Ward.

Store windows glowed with toys, cameras, dolls, and train sets, while giant wreaths and colorful lights stretched across the streets.

You could hear Salvation Army bells, car horns, and Christmas music drifting from open doors.
