Tuckamore Chamber Music Festival The Tuckamore Festival offers an outstanding summer chamber music series each August in St. John's NL John's, Newfoundland.

Since 2001, the Tuckamore Festival has offered an inspiring and intensive chamber music program for emerging musicians in historic St. For two weeks, talented pianists and string players perform and attend numerous concerts as well as participate in workshops, open rehearsals, private lessons, coachings, and master classes.

🎼✨Meet the Young Artists'!✨🎼

A warm welcome to our Young Artist composers! Yan Liang, Judah Williams, and Simon Rostis, have written music to be premiered by our Young Artist performers, and will be learning from composer-in-residence Melissa Hui.

🎼 Yan Liang is a Montreal-based composer whose work draws on literary and spiritual influences. Her music, known for its rich textures and subtle detail, has been featured at international festivals including abeceda, Tuckamore, and highSCORE. She has held residencies with several Montreal ensembles and continues her Nigredo series exploring alchemical themes.

🎼Judah Williams is a pianist and composer blending classical, impressionist, and contemporary styles. Currently studying at the University of British Columbia, his works have been performed by orchestras across Canada, including the Vancouver and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestras. He is a recipient of multiple national awards in piano and composition.

🎼Simon Rostis is a Nova Scotia–born composer based in Montreal, studying at McGill University with Melissa Hui. His music blends early music influences with contemporary styles, and his works span concert music, wind ensemble, and film. Upcoming premieres include pieces with the McGill Wind Ensemble and the Fusiliers Mont-Royal Band.

Their newly composed works will premiered by our Young Artists on Saturday, June 27th at 7:00 pm!

🎼✨Meet the guest artists and faculty!✨🎼

Dr. Angela Pickett is a Canadian violist with a dynamic international career spanning chamber, contemporary, and crossover performance. A graduate of Memorial University, Juilliard, and the Manhattan School of Music, she has performed at major venues including Carnegie Hall and the Library of Congress.

A former member of Sybarite5 and founding member of The Overlook Quartet, she continues to perform, record, and teach widely. Based in New York City, she is also active on Broadway and serves as a Music Director and chamber coach with Lincoln Center Stage.

Angela will be performing at the Fire, Fury, and Folklore concert alongside Violaine Melançon and the Tuckamore faculty. You can see this performance at the D.F. Cook Recital Hall, Friday, June 26, at 7:30 pm. A post-concert chat with the artists will follow this performance!

Featuring Beatrice Duong (Piano), Mariana Pit Torres (Cello), Gabriella Liu (Violin), and Amanda Yee (Violin), This energetic collective unites a selection of Canada's most compelling new musical talents.

🎼Beatrice Duong (Piano) is a Vietnamese-born pianist now based in Canada, currently pursuing her Master’s at Memorial University. A University of Toronto graduate, she is an active performer and dedicated teacher known for her expressive and nuanced playing.

🎼Mariana Pit Torres (Cello) is a Brazilian cellist studying at the University of Toronto with Paul Widner. Trained in Porto Alegre, she is an award-winning performer active in orchestral and chamber music across Canada and Brazil.

🎼Gabriella Liu (Violin) is a Toronto-based violist studying at the University of Toronto. A former member of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, she is an active chamber musician and teacher working with young pianists and violinists.

🎼Amanda Yee (Violin) is an Ottawa-born violinist currently pursuing her Master’s at Memorial University. A graduate of the University of Toronto, she has performed at major festivals across Canada and is active as both a performer and educator.

🎼✨Meet the guest artists and faculty!✨🎼

Violaine Melançon is a renowned violinist and educator dedicated to violin and chamber music. She is an Associate Professor of Violin at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music and has taught and given masterclasses at leading institutions, including the New England Conservatory, Glenn Gould School, and Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

A founding member of the award-winning Peabody Trio, she has performed internationally and continues to appear at major summer festivals. She is also an active baroque violinist, and her recordings can be heard on Naxos, Artek, CRI, and New World Records.

Violaine will be performing at the Fire, Fury, and Folklore concert along with Angela Pickett and the Tuckamore faculty. You can see this performance at the D.F. Cook Recital Hall on Friday, June 26, at 7:30 pm. A post-concert chat with the artists will follow this performance!

🎼✨Meet the Young Artist!✨🎼

Featuring Matthew Dao (Piano), Layla-Björt Jóhönnudóttir (Violin), Rebecca Lima (Cello), and Solomon Cheung (Violin), this vibrant ensemble showcases some of Canada’s most promising emerging musicians.

🎼Matthew Dao (Piano) is a pianist and multiple international competition winner, with performances at Carnegie Hall. A First Class Honours graduate of the Royal Conservatory, he now studies at The Glenn Gould School on full scholarship and performs regularly as an orchestral pianist.

🎼Layla-Björt Jóhönnudóttir (Violin) is a 17-year-old Icelandic-Persian violinist studying at McGill’s Schulich School of Music. An active chamber musician, she has performed at La Maison Symphonique and collaborates on projects across Canada and internationally.

🎼Solomon Cheung (Violin) is a 16-year-old violist studying at the Phil and Eli Taylor Academy. He has performed with the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and won numerous competitions, while actively engaging in orchestral and chamber music.

🎼Rebecca Lima (Cello) is a Venezuelan-born cellist and University of Toronto student who began her musical journey through El Sistema. She performs with TSYO and UTSO, and is a teaching artist with Sistema Toronto, sharing her passion for music and collaboration.

🎼✨Meet the guest artists and faculty!✨🎼

From St. John's, Heather Kao has been the concertmaster of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra and first violinist of the Atlantic String Quartet since 2015. She studied at Memorial University with Dr. Nancy Dahn and has been a guest performer on countless recordings, as well as on TV and radio. She has enjoyed performing many genres, from pop music with Rod Stewart and Hey Rosetta!, to traditional music with Ennis and the Once, and is often a guest violinist for several local choirs. She has played in pit orchestras for many productions, and has performed with Kittiwake Ballet, Opera on the Avalon, and TaDa! Events. She has just finished a third season with Come From Away in Gander.

Heather will be performing at the Majestic at 7:30 pm on Saturday, July 4th, with Tom Allen & Friends for a night of Brahms in New York.

🎼✨Meet the guest artists and faculty!✨🎼

🎸Matthew Byrne is one of Canada’s leading traditional singers, known for his powerful voice and distinctive interpretations of folk songs. Since his debut album Ballads (2010), he has built an international following. His latest album, Stealing Time (2025), recorded in the UK with producer Martin Simpson, won two 2026 Canadian Folk Music Awards.

🎭Dave Paddon is a storyteller and writer from Northwest River, Labrador, now based in St. John’s. Inspired by traditional songs and kitchen-table “sessions,” he began writing recitations in 2007 and has since created over 50 works. His stories have been published in chapbooks, recordings, and children’s books, and he is a familiar presence at festivals and community events across Newfoundland and Labrador.

🎼✨Meet the guest artists and faculty!✨🎼

Melissa Hui is a Hong Kong–born, Vancouver-raised composer known for music that blends ethereal beauty with striking intensity. A graduate of Yale University and CalArts, she has commissioned and performed her work with leading orchestras and ensembles worldwide, including the Kronos Quartet and the National Arts Centre Orchestra.

Her music has been heard across North America, Europe, and Asia, and she has received major honours including a Guggenheim Fellowship. Now based in Montreal, she continues to create bold, imaginative works for the global stage.

Tuckamore's Opening Night: At Water's Edge concert features the premiere of a new work written for Duo Concertante by Melissa, and she will be working with our young artist composers this festival season.

🎼✨Meet the Young Artists!✨🎼

Featuring Ryan Wu (cello), Anna Jeong (piano), Esther Van Rooi (violin), Simon Hauber (violin), and Caleb Chui (violin), this dynamic ensemble brings together some of Canada’s most exciting emerging musicians.

🎼Ryan Wu (cello) is a third-year student at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music, studying under Professor Shauna Rolston. He has performed with the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and trained at the Royal Conservatory’s Phil and Eli Tay.

🎼Anna Jeong (piano) is pursuing her Master of Music at Western University with Dr. Angela Park. A graduate of the University of Lethbridge with Great Distinction, she is an award-winning collaborative pianist and founding member of the Con Brio Trio.

🎼Esther Van Rooi (violin) is currently studying at the University of Toronto with Mark Fewer. Originally from Port Coquitlam, she has trained at the Vancouver Academy of Music and participated in programs such as PRISMA and NYO Canada.

🎼Simon Hauber (violin) studies at the University of Toronto and has served as concertmaster for multiple orchestras, including the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra. A dedicated chamber musician, he has performed widely across Niagara and Toronto.

🎼Caleb Chui (Violin) is a third-year violinist studying under Jonathan Crow at the University of Toronto. Proud to call Vancouver, British Columbia, his home, Caleb has represented the city of Vancouver on several occasions at the British Columbia Performing Arts Festival.
