The Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Arts Society is thrilled to welcome to the Festival stage the incomparable Andrew Kagumba.

Andrew is a Ugandan folk musician, music educator, and ethnomusicologist. He holds a Ph.D. in Music Education from Texas Tech University and is currently completing a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology at Memorial University of Newfoundland. A regular performer and clinician at international concerts and festivals, Dr. Kagumba draws on the rich musical traditions of Uganda and East Africa in his artistic and educational work.

Flower Hill is the bluegrass/country trio project of Sherry Ryan, Andrea Monro, and Maria Cherwick. Individually, all three of these women have extensive performing and touring history, have been celebrated with awards, and can often be found collaborating with some of Newfoundland & Labrador's finest musicians. Together over the past decade, Flower Hill has shared songs and stories in communities all across the province. Their performances include songs from some of their favourite female artists, such as Dolly Parton and Gillian Welsh, as well as original songs and tunes from all three women!

The Road to 49 1/2 | Remembering Mark Hiscock

Music has a way of bringing people together, and few did that better than Mark Hiscock.
A gifted singer and accordion player, Mark shared his talent with audiences for many years as a member of Shanneyganock, leaving an unforgettable mark on Newfoundland and Labrador’s music scene.

We’re deeply touched that a donation was made in his memory as we celebrate the road to August 8.

Actor. Writer. Storyteller.

A stalwart of Newfoundland theatre for nearly fifty years, Andy Jones was born in St. John's, where he worked at the Resource Centre for the Arts at the L.S.P.U. Hall, writing, co-writing, acting in, and directing many original productions (and fundraising and washing floors). His more recent work has seen him adapting Newfoundland folktales as children’s books, as well as writing and touring nationally (and a little bit internationally) 5 one-man comedy shows.

Andy previously performed at the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival as Uncle Val in The Sheila's Brush Theatre Company's production of "Jack Meets the Cat" (based on the story as told by Pius Power Sr.), as well as in a number of performances at the Neil Murray Stage, including the puppet show version of "The Queen of Paradise's Garden" (based on the story as told by Albert Heber Keeping of Grand Bank). He has told stories at The Story Telling Festival of Toronto, The Longue Veille Festival in Cape St. George, and has toured to many Newfoundland and Labrador schools.

Teeveen brings together veterans of the St. John’s traditional music scene, each accomplished in their own right, offering a variety of folk and traditional songs and tunes from a diverse repertoire. This trio weaves a unique blend of style and delivery that promises to enliven, enchant, and entertain.

Taking the main stage at the Folk Festival on August 8, the stellar Nadine Hollett & Don Walsh will be joined by musician extraordinaire Billy Sutton, playing the role of Bryan Poirier, who is sadly unavailable. We'll miss Bryan for sure, but we can't wait to experience the Teeveen + Billy Sutton collab!

Ready for some line-up reveals? Well then, let's begin with our morning's entertainment.

Small stage performances will take place in the gazebo, starting at 10:00am.

10:00am: We begin, as we love to, with a performance by some wonderful Young Folk, this time featuring Sadie Greene, Julian Murdey, Lauren Howse, Erika Dietz, and Charla Marie.

11:00am: Time for some Tunes! Players include Gerry Strong, Wanda Crocker, Maria Peddle, Jason Whelan, and Brad Klucowicz.

12:00pm: We'll finish up in the gazebo with Bluegrass vibes, brought to you by Dave Rowe, Ted Rowe, Neil Rosenberg, Matt Hender, Maria Cherwick, Matthew Hornell, Mark Finch, and Daniel Banoub.

Chris Brookes dedicated his life to preserving and sharing the stories of Newfoundland and Labrador through radio, theatre, and the arts.

Here it is! The volunteer application for this year's Folk Festival is now live! We need a few good hands to help us keep everything running smoothly and safely. Volunteers are needed for physical roles, including set-up, tear-down, and ongoing maintenance of the site, as well as people-focused roles, like audience and volunteer relations, and selling NFLAS merchandise and accepting donations. Join us Saturday, August 8, in Bannerman Park for the 491/2 annual Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Festival! Admission is FREE!

Attendees can expect a full day and evening of entertainment in the park. Small stage performances start at 10:00am, with sessions focused on traditional tunes, bluegrass, and our Young Folk. At 1:00pm, the action moves to the main stage, where the crowd will be wowed by an amazing line-up of performers featuring some of the best-known local names in traditional, folk, and world music. The performers include longtime Festival champions such as Kelly Russell, Linda Byrne, Jim Payne & Fergus O’Byrne, Anita Best & Pamela Morgan, and Andy Jones, as well as newer faces like Soup’ du Jour, Eagle Women, the NL Latin Band, and Andrew Kagumba. Stay tuned to our socials for the full line-up announcement over the coming days!

The smaller celebration this year will not include a beer tent, food concessions, or other vendors. We encourage all attendees to bring along their own picnic (no alcohol please) plus your family and friends for a music-filled day!

The Festival this year would not be possible without the generous support of the government of Newfoundland & Labrador through the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, and Recreation. Thanks to this funding, admission to the Festival is free for all comers. We will be accepting donations via debit or credit card.
