The Jack Drury Memorial Dirtbowl Golf Classic has a hole-in-one winner!
Congratulations to Aaron Miller - Hole #9, 169 yards. The Hole-in-One Challenge was sponsored bySutton-Huron Shores Realty Inc. Brokerage and was a chance for local golfers to test their skills for the chance to win an amazing prize of $10,000. Congratulation Aaron! Well done!
For years, the Dirtbowl had brought our community together through flag football, but this group of local volunteers led by Joey Wentworth onto the greens on Saturday August 2nd at The Southampton Golf & Country Club with the first-ever Dirtbowl Golf Classic. It was an exciting day of golf, prizes, and fun, all while supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grey Bruce & West Simcoe and the SDSS Royals.
As Wentworth founder of this community fundraiser says, “It's about community and being there for each other! Together, we can make a difference.”
The day consisted of football-themed course challenges with golfers not only trying their golf swing, but they threw, caught, and kicked their way through the course. These fun, football-inspired activities kept all ages of golfers on their toes.
This was the inaugural golf tournament event for this local group and with Aaron’s hole-in-one this golf tournament will be one to remember for both organizers and golfers!
Thank you to all the volunteers and sponsors of this important event that supports our local youth.
The Southampton Golf & Country Club is proud to be a part of what we are sure will become to an annual fundraiser and golf tournament for this amazing group paying tribute to a dear friend and team mate.
This Event’s Community Impact:
Every golf swing that was taken today helps this group support our local youth. As well as the local high school football program that Jack was very proud to be a part of.
BACKGROUND ON THIS EVENT:
Jack Drury (fondly known as "Dirt") was a student at Saugeen District Secondary School when he took his own life at 18 years of age in 2017.
“Dirt” was well known beyond his circle of high school friends and was a committed member of the Saugeen District Secondary School’s Royals football team and for four years he worked as a summer student in the Town of Saugeen Shores Parks and Recreation Department.
Wentworth and a group of local residents and friends of Jack’s started the Jack Drury Memorial Dirt Bowl in 2018 to honour their friend with an annual flag football tournament to raise money for local mental health initiatives.
Wentworth was Jack's coach when he played for the SDSS Royals.
