Happy Summer Solstice!

Today marks the official start of astronomical summer in the Northern Hemisphere – and it’s the longest day of the year!

At 10:42 pm EDT (2:42 am GMT, June 21), the Sun travels its longest, highest arc across the sky all year for those north of the equator.

For centuries, cultures around the world have celebrated this moment from sunrise rituals at Stonehenge to dancing around maypoles in Sweden. It’s a time to honor the Sun, the Earth, and the turning of the seasons.

So what’s happening, exactly? The summer solstice occurs when Earth’s axial tilt leans most directly toward the Sun – about 23.5 degrees – placing the Sun directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer. This tilt is also what gives us our seasons. Around this time, regions north of the Arctic Circle experience 24 hours of daylight, while the Southern Hemisphere begins its astronomical winter.

Wherever you are, take a moment to soak in the sunlight; it’s the most we’ll get all year!

Youth approached by suspicious vehicle

Police are warning of a suspicious vehicle that approached a youth in Stellarton today.
At approximately 2:00 p.m., an 11-year-old youth was in the area of the Sobeys Soccer Complex on Old Foxbrook Road when he was approached by a suspicious vehicle, described as a newer model black Mercedes Benz with darkened windows. The male driver told the youth to get in the car. He refused and contacted a trusted adult. The vehicle then left the area. The youth was unable to describe the male driver but described the passenger as a female wearing a blue ball hat.
Police commend the youth for confiding in an adult.

The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call police at 902-752-6160. Anonymous tips can be sent to Crime Stoppers by calling toll-free 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submitting a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca

Heads up:

05/24/2025

extends our heartfelt congratulations to Liv Tompkins on receiving the Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor’s Education Award!

In February, Liv participated in the Youth Leadership Workshop in Regina. She was supported to attend by the RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment Community Action Response Team (CART). While participating in the Leadership Program Liv connected with other Indigenous youths from across the country and was also able to gain helpful resources for a community action plan project.

Liv is an active volunteer in her community of Tantallon and has also taken on a meaningful project with the RCMP as part of a framework for a Community Action Plan. Members of CART work with youth on Community Action Plan projects geared towards helping youth create solutions to challenges they see in their communities.

Liv is creating a colouring book that youth can share with their families, focusing on the Seven Sacred Teachings of the Mi'kmaq. As a student she observed firsthand that youth are learning about Mi’kmaq history and wanted to find a way to bring this knowledge home to families.

Through her actions, Liv has demonstrated exceptional dedication to her community, culture, and country.
salutes her on this well-deserved recognition!
