History
The Guglielmo Marconi Society is a highly respected organization in the city of Sault Ste. It is composed of a family of Italian Canadians, both first generation and subsequent generations who reside in Canada. In the early 1900's, Italians moved to Sault Ste. Marie and resided in what was known as "Little Italy," a west end district located near the steel plant factory. The society was a place where "paesani" could socialize and enjoy meals together. The site also served as a settlement society to assist new arrivals in establishing themselves in the new Canadian world. The name the "Marconi" was picked because at that time Marconi's discovery held the world in awe. Guglielmo Marconi sent the first wireless message over 100 years ago. In the early summer of 1895 and despite an intervening hill, Marconi achieved signal transmission and reception over a distance of about 2km. To this day, it is an honour to have our local club named after this pioneering Italian.
