Saskatoon Twirlers

The Saskatoon Twirlers are a group of craftspeople with a shared interest in pushing themselves technically and creatively in woodworking. This interest is reflected in the number of them who have been selected for the Sask Craft Council juried show, Dimensions, including multiple best in show winners. Between them, they have had several exhibitions both at the Saskatchewan Craft Council as well as the Mendel Art Gallery. The original members had common experiences in the Saskatchewan Wood Workers’ Guild and the Emma International Collaboration. Initially they were primarily wood turners.

Al Bakke, one of the original members, is a multimedia craftsman with blacksmithing and knife making as additional disciplines. This made it natural to expand the membership to include another metal smith, knife maker and current Emma Collaboration participant Grant Irons.
They’re primarily a social group, having monthly rotating shop visits and share each others’
technical problems as well as admiring each other’s finished products.

The Saskatoon Twirlers will be exhibiting work from 5 of their members. They are well known
both locally and internationally for their incredible one of a kind furniture, wood turned items, as well as blacksmithing and handmade knives.

Cindy Thomson creates under the name of River City Signatures in the city of Saskatoon where she has spent most of her life. Her primary medium is alternative photography. Cyanotypes are the primary focus of her work but she also uses the Van Dyke Brown process. The cyanotype process involves coating a surface, in this case fabric or paper, with a solution of iron salts then placing objects or negatives on top and exposing it to uv light which results in a blue image. In Van Dyke Brown photography, the process is similar except the chemicals used to treat the fabric/paper are iron, acid and silver resulting in a sepia toned image.
Inspired by nature and a life long love of photography, Cindy collects and dries plant specimens to use in her work. In addition, she draws on her large photographic collection to create negatives that produce the alternative photographic images.
Cindy also handmakes notebooks of various styles including coptic binding, stab binding and hardcover case binding. Various decorative papers and fabrics are used in her work such as Japanese paper and her own cyanotype and Van Dyke Brown images. Currently, the products that she produces for purchase include: cyanotype/van dyke brown images, framed or unframed, notecards, bookmarks (on paper/wood), tote bags and zippered pouches with cyanotype images and miscellany/notebooks.

The one accessory one can’t do without during our cold Saskatchewan winters are mittens! And Karen Boldt of Something from Nothing Mittens has been creating the warmest, coziest ones from woolly thrifted sweaters for many years now.

Her one-of-a-kind creations come in a variety of sizes for adults as well as for kids and little baby ones on a string too! They are each fully lined with soft cotton flannel so that you won’t feel the itchiness of wool but will only benefit from the warmth of the natural, breathable fibres of wool and cotton. Each beautifully crafted pair is handmade by Karen and her assistant Joy, recycled from previously loved wool sweaters. Each pair carefully created with love!

Something from Nothing Mittens focuses on a good quality, well made mitten and adds little extras like their vintage ceramic handmade decorative buttons. Karen loves that old sweaters can take on new life in this way and also likes hearing her customer’s stories of how her mittens are keeping hands protected from the elements across the prairies and far beyond!

Seven Threaded Acres is a small-batch sewing business created by Lauren Hydomako, a maker with a love for functional design and timeless style. She handcrafts every item in her home sewing studio, offering a collection of practical, stylish pieces that include quilted box pouches, baskets, and versatile bags. Lauren works with high-quality materials, using cotton fabrics in many of her creations for their softness, durability, and natural feel.

Lauren first learned to sew in her high school Home Ec. class, but it wasn’t until the early days of the Covid pandemic that she picked it up again in a more meaningful way. What started as a creative outlet soon grew into a small business. Originally named Stitched with Love, her business became Seven Threaded Acres after she and her husband moved to their forever home - over seven peaceful acres that now inspire her work and her brand.

One of her most beloved creations is the Heritage Bag, a sleek and functional bag designed entirely by Lauren. Made from sturdy canvas materials, it features a removable blanket that snaps on and off, making it perfect for families on the go or anyone who values both comfort and convenience. Like all of her products, the Heritage Bag reflects Lauren’s commitment to quality craftsmanship and everyday beauty.

Marylin Black is a Métis swampy Cree artisan with family roots in Cumberland house Saskatchewan. She is part of the 60s scoop and found her way home in 2015. While working with students and staff at Gabriel Dumont Institute where she was a program coordinator, everyone wanted to know more about the awakening of ribbon skirts.

Research was conducted and she brought in a local Indigenous skirt maker to give a workshop. Marylin was hooked. Since then, her reconciliation has been to learn about the history of Turtle Island and to share it out broadly. Part of this grew her passion to create cultural, sacred items, such as ribbon skirts and shirts.

Marylin started making many skirts and people began requesting them so much that she created her business, Sage Ribbon Designs. Her goal is to make culture accessible. She makes wearable art including ribbon skirts, ribbon shirts, aprons, top bags, lanyards, blankets, and scrub caps.

Pat Grayston moved her father’s 1955 barn to her river hill and converted it into her Riverview Arts studio in 2003 after completing her BFA with great distinction. All her work is created in her studio, just 3 km north of Shellbrook, on highway #55.

Pat has an intaglio press in her loft and a pottery wheel and kiln on the ground floor. She currently applies her knowledge of design and colour to the decoration of fabric, both silk and cotton. She works primarily on scarves but she also produces artistically decorated blouses and shirts.

Pat works in 4 distinct dying methods. When making botanical prints she creates the dyes she uses from her acreage, using roots, leaves and blossoms. She often uses the same dyes, along with stencils which she carves, in various natural dye techniques. She selects and dries organic material to be later used in cyanotypes, sometimes in conjunction with stencils she has created. Pat stitches on cotton and silk to create intricate patterns with indigo dye. She also uses her own stencils and hand crafted wooden press molds to create patterns with indigo.

.makez

Frieda Gesiorowski is the creator of Mum Makes. She creates one of a kind crocheted snugglers inspired by prairie life where she was born and currently resides; many of her pieces are unique to animals on the prairies.

Frieda’s Mother was also part of her inspiration and her teacher, although her Mother’s craft was building unique blankets. She hopes her Mom would be proud of her little creations. New this year, Frieda has created skunks, foxes, raccoons, and mallard ducks. Other pieces include moose, cows, chickens, bunnies, kittens and dogs. She also creates animals from other parts of the world including elephants, lions, and zebras. She is always trying to challenge herself and create new and different animals.

Also new this year are accessories for the snugglers. She has created cute crocheted scarves, toques, and flower headbands, with the ears cut out that fit the little snugglers perfectly.

Made of super soft yarn and fillers, with no eyes or pieces that can be removed, these creations are perfect for babies or any adult that just would like something cute to snuggle!
