Some stories write themselves. Others wait 25 years.

Over two decades ago, during my very first teaching role in Alberta, I met a little girl named Ashley. Ashley has Down syndrome, and she lit up every hallway she walked through. Her smile was wide, her laugh unforgettable, and her spirit—pure sunshine. As a new teacher, and a sibling to a downs sister, I didn’t know then how deeply certain students could root themselves in your heart forever. Ashley did.

Over the years, I’ve often thought about her. Wondered how she was doing. Wished I could reconnect. And lately—especially as I’ve been pouring my heart into Sisters Squared, a podcast that honours the bond of sisterhood and the beauty of inclusion—I’ve felt an undeniable pull to find her again. I even imagined what it might be like to have her as a guest, on “Sisters Squared” to share her story and celebrate the unique light she brings to the world.

And then, life did what it does when your universe is wide open.

Ashley walked into my store.🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️with mom and sister.

Not a message. Not a call. Not a tagged post. She physically walked through the door, arm in arm with her sister, shopping for a dress for her sister’s wedding.

I stood there, stunned. Ashley hadn’t changed a bit—still radiant, still unfiltered joy. And her sister… just as protective, just as tender. It was surreal. Like time folded in on itself. Like the universe whispered, “Here she is.”

You can call it timing. Serendipity. Manifestation. Divine choreography. All I know is that when you’re walking in alignment—with purpose, with passion, with love—life puts exactly who you need right in front of you. Even 25 years later.

Ashley is no longer just a memory from my early teaching days. She’s here, now, at the very heart of this journey I’m on. And something tells me… this is only the beginning, a new career in modelling?
