A message from Mike and Melissa
We’ve been so reluctant to post this...but we need to say something about farmstand theft. Not because we need sympathy (we’re durable!) or solutions (cameras and other options are being explored) but because we think it needs to be known that all is not well in our community lately – and it’s affecting multiple farmstands around the island.
Operating an honesty stand is intrinsically risky, we get it. Leaving our bins of fresh produce, flowers and goodies unmonitored in a high traffic part of the island sometimes feels equivalent to wandering through a lion pen with an armload of meat – how could we expect to not get bitten? But we’ve always had faith, and in turn have been met with a negligible amount of theft – a tomato here, a bag of lettuce there... we account for it and move on.
However, this year something changed. Within only a few days of opening our farmstand in May, we’d had three bouquets stolen. And then another one the next day. It was the May long weekend and although frustrating, we speculated that it might be one-time visitors to the island who felt no sense of accountability; or people caught up in a busy weekend who forgot to etransfer once they got home.
But the weekend passed and there were more thefts...and more...and before we knew it we were up to 9 bouquets stolen over the course of a few weeks. And then produce started going missing...
We’ve now had more flower theft this year than in all of our previous years combined.
What the thief will never see is that behind every one of those bouquets is months of labour by the two of us to grow those flowers and bring them to the community, labour that remains unpaid until peak season begins. Our farmstand sales represent a significant chunk of our income and also make it possible for us to get our produce to the community efficiently – we just don’t have the hours in the day to start “manning the stand.”
Sadly, we’ve learned that we’re not alone in this issue – we know of at least two other farmstands dealing with new and significant theft this season; maybe there are more? We’d like to hear from you if so!
It’s unlikely there will be a simple solution to this (we’re not really allowed to run people off the island these days, are we?) and we’re way too optimistic to let it hold us back, but thank you for allowing us a little vent in the meantime!
