This afternoon I'm writing to you from Vancouver where I will hop on "The Canadian" tonight. I am VIA rail's Onboard Musician for the next week (with a three-day stopover in Winnipeg over the weekend to play a couple of shows.) I will be playing music on the train in exchange for transport, room & board while crossing Canada.

I love the pace of the train. It is a tremendous way to appreciate how vast and varied Canada is. Traveling by train is similar to the slow-food movement ~ the landscape unravels slowly enough for you to absorb how reaaaally far distances are... I will be on the train in total for FOUR DAYS. And I'm only going as far as Toronto! Mountains to prairie to boreal forest to great lakes, this is a gorgeous country.

You may remember I did this trip last fall (this was shortly after the YEP house concert): [Below is a link to few pictures on flickr from that trip.] There is no internet access aboard the train, but I will do my best to keep you up-to-date with new photos and stories posted as we travel station to station.

If you happen to be heading east this week on the train, you'll even get to hear a few classics like Blue Moon and Snowbird that I (re)learned just for the occasion. But if you don't make it onboard, be sure to join me onland at one of the following shows where I may or may not throw in a cover tune, depending on my mood. :)

Update from Greg Weichel re: an impromptu benefit this Saturday (June 16) that he is organizing for Matthew Fines, who is battling cancer. The event is being held from 2-6 at the Pig's Ear. Admission is $5 at the door. Proceeds from a barbecue and CD and Tshirt sales will go to Matthew as well. Enjoy the sounds of the Rocket R***e, Catfish Willie and the Bucklebusters and the Wolfgang Brothers plus many friends! Since no advertising for this impromptu event has occurred, Greg asks that each of us tell as many people as possible. If you feel inclined to re-post, this message would reach many more people and would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to Yellow Event Planning's Facebook presence. There is a 'real' website too but like this... it's still being birthed.

Right off the bat there are three events happening - not the epic complicated fundraising arty culturey worth planning months in advance and getting dressed up fancy type events that will happen in the future but still... worth attending!
