Meet Ben! Born and raised in Navan, Ben Lawlor continues to call the community home, living just outside the village with his fiancé and their dog, Rocket. Ben currently works as a journeyman electrician while also serving the community as a volunteer firefighter with Station 71 in Navan.

Ben has always maintained a strong connection to the agricultural community. At just 12 years old, he began working on a local dairy farm, helping clean the milking room and robotic systems. Over the years, he also became involved in local 4-H beef shows alongside friends, raised chickens in his father’s backyard right in the village, and today continues to farm with his fiancé’s family. Together, they produce hay and have raised draft horses, beef cattle, and turkeys.

Deeply rooted in the local community, Ben also stays active year-round through hockey, curling, and three-pitch softball, all activities that keep him connected to the people and spirit of Navan.

Meet John Edwards the 2009 Navan Fair Ambassador!

John grew up immersed in rural life, helping with milking cows, working with horses, and grading eggs. It was his passion for horses that led him to a remarkable career spanning over 20 years as a farrier, where he dedicated himself to caring for horses’ hooves across his community and neighbouring towns.

Throughout his career, John competed as a farrier across North America and the UK, and had the honour of representing Canada twice as a member of the national farriers team.

Beyond his work with horses, John also served his community as a volunteer firefighter in Vars for about five years. In 2024, he followed that passion further, relocating to Thunder Bay to pursue firefighting while embracing life in a more remote part of Ontario.

Above all, John’s greatest pride is his family, his three children, Adeline, Hazel, and Sawyer. They share his love for community, actively taking part in events like the Navan Fair and other local gatherings in the North.

John is also a strong advocate for community involvement. He recognizes that events like local fairs are becoming less common due to declining participation, and he reminds us that these traditions only continue because of volunteers. So if you enjoy these events, consider stepping up and getting involved, because they simply don’t happen without people willing to give their time.
