Dubstep originated in South London in the late 1990s and early 2000s as a dark, minimalist blend of UK garage, dub, and jungle. Defined by heavy sub-bass, syncopated rhythms, and Β« wobble Β» bass, it grew from an underground scene into a global, high-energy mainstream genre by the early 2010s.
