Our are finally opening!

Our lilacs are finally in the ground! We planted 12 bushes across 6 different varieties—though we’re keeping our fingers crossed for two that are looking a bit rough.

It’ll take some time for them to fully establish, but I can’t wait to see them thrive as they age. We still have to finish amending the soil and laying down landscape fabric, but at least these beauties can finally hit the ground running!

Yesterday we planted over 800 snapdragon seeds, 80 dahlia seeds, and 34 dahlia tubers!!!! And this is only the start. We’ll be sowing a new round of seeds each week; introducing new flower varieties each time.

We hope to have everything out in the hoop house by April! Hopefully we’re doing this right.

This is why we’re building Cedar Brook Flower Farm, to support Operation Angels and allow visitors to experience the Esther Effect right here at the farm where it all began.

When Esther passed in 2023, I knew I wanted to be part of something special to honour her legacy, and to do something that would provide support to local, struggling sanctuaries. But in collaboration with an incredible team, including Krista Hiddema, Lauri Torgerson-White, and Kyle Behrerd, Operation Angels became something so much more than I ever could have imagined.

You all know the incredible responsibility that comes with running a farmed animal sanctuary. They provide lifelong care to animals who often come with a scary past and an even scarier future if it weren’t for the founders, staff, and volunteers who give so much of themselves to provide a safe forever home. They also provide critical education and advocate for their residents in our mutual desire to make the world a kinder place for all kinds. But… they’re expected to do ALL of this with very little resources, and with little or no safety net for the next “emergency” rescue or medical situation.

Operation Angels was created to support farmed animal sanctuaries, not only with financial assistance, but with critically important educational resources to help them do their work well and sustainably. And this is where things get really cool. We have consulted with some of the best and brightest in the sanctuary and advocacy world to create an evaluation tool that will help identify strengths and challenges. We’ve also leaned into Krista’s extensive educational background and amazing SPAA program to develop “SPAA for Sanctuary,” a multi-module educational program that focuses on:
• strong governance and leadership
• high standards of animal care
• social media for fundraising and community building
• long-term planning and organizational health
• pairing funding with real capacity-building
• and more…

These tools are not about perfection, by any means. They’re about sustainability, and about being the best we can be. The best caregivers, the best educators, and the best advocates for the animals who are counting on us.

At launch, we will provide funding support to sanctuaries in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, along with free learning tools and resources available to sanctuaries worldwide.

I want to express my sincere thanks to Krista, Lauri, and Kyle, who have worked tirelessly to make all of this possible, as well as to our amazing team of advisors, contributors, and our Board of Directors, who have given their time, expertise, and encouragement. This project would not exist without them, and I am both proud and humbled to be working alongside them.

If you are interested in learning more about Operation Angels and how we can help your sanctuary, or if you would like to provide financial support (our Angel Donor has offered to add .50 for every $1 we raise) so we can support sanctuaries who need us, please visit our website at www.operationangels.org, or send us an email at [email protected].

I hope somebody makes you smile today.

Welcome to our flower farm page! Thank you for being a part of our journey as we learn and grow together. To kick the year off, we are on a mission to start our very own Dahlia tuber program right here at the farm—and we’d love for you to be a "founding member" of our flower family!

Why tubers and not seeds? To get those breathtaking, true-to-color blooms we all love, we have to start with tubers. Our goal is to grow these tubers, divide them, and eventually breed our own custom farm varieties. By starting with these foundation “parent” plants, we will not only build our collection by dividing the tubers every year and multiplying the number of plants we have, but we can also collect seed. Every seed is a surprise—the color depends entirely on which flower the bees visited that day, creating a new and unique plant we can grow on and possibly introduce as our very own brand new variety of Dahlia.

Want to leave your mark on the farm? We’ve curated a list of timeless, stunning varieties like the Cafe au Lait and Obsidian. If you choose to gift a tuber to the farm, you aren't just sending a plant—you’re helping us build a legacy.

As a thank you, you’ll get: Exclusive "behind-the-scenes" email updates on your specific tuber(s). To follow your tuber from sprouting to bloom and propagation. You’ll also get first dibs on naming opportunities and invitations to private garden tours!
