Did you know that the Country Fest once had its own holiday?

All the way back in 1902, due to the overwhelming popularity of the fair the previous year, school children across the community were granted a school holiday just so they could attend the Fall Fair.

You may notice that we used to call it the ‘Fall Fair’. The fair that is now the Country Fest was actually held in September up until the 1950s (the same time at which it moved to its current home at the Albion Fairgrounds). Even after being moved up to July, the ‘Fall Fair’ would not change its name until 1998.

While the Country Fest has seen many changes in names, locations, and times over the last 125 years, the organization behind it has never changed. The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Agricultural Association has been the driving force behind all incarnations of the Country Fest since 1901.

⏰We’ve grown a lot!

Did you know that only around 50 families lived in Maple Ridge when it was incorporated way back in 1874? The land included in the municipality originally encompassed what is now Pitt Meadows, stretching all the way from the Pitt River in the west to the Stave in the east. The people living in Maple Ridge were mostly homesteaders and farmers, and mostly lived near the water, using the Fraser as their ‘highway’.

Only 27 years later, the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Agricultural Association was born to hold Fall Fairs to “encourage the cultivation of the soil and general development of all agricultural resources of the district”. The first Fall Fair in 1901 featured familiar competitions for livestock, field and garden produce, and more. There were almost 500 entries into these competitions, showing the huge leap in those calling our community their home in only a few decades.

In those days, agricultural fairs were more than a place for the farmers of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to proudly show off their livestock and home goods, they were a 'gathering place' for the entire community. This is a tradition we seek to continue with our many community events, one of which - Pitt Meadows Day - takes place tomorrow, June 6th!
