In 1901 a small but determined group of Lutherans set the cornerstone to build a church on the banks of the LaHave River, St. Mark's Lutheran Church. For the next 104 years that St. Mark's would serve its community as a place of worship, a place of solace and a place of celebration. Now known as St. Mark's Place, it is no longer a Lutheran church but has been restored to reflect its past glory wit

h some updates to accommodate for its use in the 21st century as a rental facility. In 2012 the restoration efforts earned us the first ever award presented by the Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia for Places of Worship. Mark's Place is still available to host those most significant events we all wish to mark in our lives.

Quintz Jam is a group of five or six local musicians who have set out to combine some interesting instrumental or woodwind chamber music with a 'jazzual' rhythm section consisting of a guitar and a bass. The wind instruments are flute, clarinet, saxophones and bass clarinet and the object is to play familiar jazz standards with a few light classics complete with ad lib solos!. They also perform selections that combine two or three familiar tunes as interesting counter melodies. You probably have never heard anything like this!

2 Desperados are (as the name suggests), two men who are desperate to bring their brand of music to the masses. Music that they describe as a blend of Blues, Jazz, Soul and Southern Rock.

Chris Weagle spent sixteen years as his alter-ego; Catahoula Brown. During that time he performed at many major festivals, opening for such legends as James Cotton and Bonnie Raitt.
He has recorded six albums - four of which have been recognized by Music Nova Scotia and the East Coast Music Association.

Tim Frauzel has been playing drums professionally since the age of 14. He has played in several well known bands, such as The Press, Sum 1, Usual Suspects, and Porthouse.
He studied at The Canadian Conservatory of Music, and currently owns his own recording studio.

Ian's fifth studio album “Bring The Light”, produced by Daniel Ledwell, is filled with the same hooky cleverness that has endeared Sherwood to his audiences. This time, the deft work of Ledwell’s production brings Sherwood’s songs a new dimension of beauty and depth.

Guitar, saxophone, huge songwriting and a voice that won him a 2013 Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Singer, Ian Sherwood Brings The Light to every stage he stands on. A born story teller and a constant creator, his music dances the line between folk and pop. His live performances thrive on intimacy. Whether it’s a theatre show or large festival stage, his persona is irresistible and completely destroys fourth walls.

When not touring the UK, US or all across Canada Sherwood produces for other artists as well as for theatre, film and television. He won a 2017 Robert Merritt for Outstanding Original Score for the play “Tompkinsville”. He was named Best Male Artist of the Year by the 2012 International Acoustic Music Awards and was the 2008 and 2010 Music Nova Scotia Musician Of The Year. Bob Mersereau of CBC Radio, Fredericton described him as “… a natural performer who entertains as much with his wit and stories as with his songs.”

On Friday March 26,2021 St. Marks Place was hit by lightning. Thanks to the very fast reporting of the fire by our neighbors, the Riverport Fire Department was able to respond very quickly along with response from the Lunenburg Fire Department. Most importantly no one was hurt. We are extremely grateful to the volunteer fire fighters and our neighbors. Due to their great work, the fire was contained to the bell tower. There was damage to the electrical system which explains why CHLU is currently off the air.

Our insurance broker Danny Carey Cooperators, our insurance broker for over 20 years, called me at 7AM to tell me that he already had things in motion. Incredible service. The fire restoration service has already been dispatched.

It will take some time to sort it all out but one of our high priorities will be to get CHLU back on the air as quickly as possible. And of course we fully intend to repair any damage to St Marks Place.

I would like to thank the community for its support for St Marks Place over the past years. It means allot.

Friday, July 31 – 7:30:9:30pm - Kristin Martell Band – Kristen is an acoustic pop artist from Mahone Bay, NS. Her songs explore the self and the way we walk through life. Her sun-dappled sound is equivalent to walking through a field on a warm, summer’s day in a state of contended reflection.

Born into a musical family, Kristen learned to love music from an early age. Her grandfather was her earliest influence as she learned piano, trombone and fiddle. She eventually found her way to the acoustic guitar, which held the key to finding her voice. She began writing songs as a form of meditation. "This form of connection is what I thrive for" she explains. "Music fills the spaces where words fall short".

Kristen has re-emerged on the music scene after having taken a 10 year break to focus on career and family. Calling it her comeback she has released her debut album ‘Coming Home’ in April 2020.
