Earn Cash - Network - Have Fun! Opportunity: Princess Margaret Road Hockey Event

I want to share a great opportunity to gain practical event experience, meet people working in the sport industry, expand your network and earn some extra cash.

The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation is looking for volunteer referees for its Road Hockey event on Saturday, October 3, at the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

David Dionne, Manager of Corporate and Community Partnerships with the Foundation, is a former Humber Sport Management student. He has shared the following details:

No previous referee experience is required

Referees will receive a $150 honorarium

Food, beverages and a referee jersey will be provided

A short virtual training session will be offered beforehand

The role is mainly to help keep the games moving

More than 25 celebrities will attend, including Kevin Pillar, Curtis Joseph and Rachel Homan

This is an excellent opportunity to build your résumé, experience a major fundraising event, make industry connections and earn some money.

Today, I am proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Building Blocks Group.

Starting my own company was never something I imagined I would do. Looking back, however, it became one of the most rewarding decisions of my career.

The Building Blocks Group specializes in grassroots and amateur sport programming. Creating meaningful opportunities for young people—and helping secondary sport properties realize their potential—has always been important to me.

Building the company gave me the opportunity to use my experience, skills, and network to develop unique programs, partnerships, and opportunities across the sport industry. It also allowed me to build a business around work I enjoy while having the flexibility to spend meaningful time with my family—something that has always been incredibly important to me.

The journey has not been without challenges. When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down amateur sport, it directly affected nearly every aspect of my business. Those were difficult and uncertain times. I had to bunker down, adapt, and persevere. I am proud that the company came through that period and continued moving forward.

To all my current and former clients: thank you for believing in me and trusting The Building Blocks Group. I have genuinely valued every partnership, friendship, and relationship developed along the way. The people I have worked with have made this journey especially rewarding.

Most importantly, thank you to my wife Cheryl Allin Boston and family for believing in me from the beginning. Your encouragement, patience, and support gave me the confidence to take this chance and keep going through every challenge.

Ten years later, I am grateful for what we have built—and excited about what comes next.

What an incredible day at the 2026 Canada Sport and Entertainment Expo on May 12!

This year’s event once again brought together an outstanding group of university athletics leaders, sport professionals, and industry vendors from across Ontario and beyond. Throughout the day, the energy inside the Holiday Inn @ Bronte ballroom was driven by meaningful conversations, new partnerships, innovative ideas, and valuable connections between delegates and exhibitors.

One of the greatest strengths of this event continues to be the opportunity to connect vendors directly with decision-makers in university athletics and sport organizations. From facility solutions and technology to fan engagement, apparel, and event services, the Expo created a space where collaboration and relationship-building could thrive.

We are especially proud that this year’s event supported two important initiatives within the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) community:
🏆 The inaugural OUA On the Rise: Women in Sport Summit
🏆 A scholarship contribution to the Black Indigenous Heritage Fund, awarded to the University of Windsor

These initiatives reflect the continued importance of creating opportunities, supporting leadership development, and building a more inclusive future for sport.
