Beasts of Burden is poetic and provocative theatre. It’s sometimes brash and sometimes heart-rending. We don’t want you to miss it, so we are offering Arts Worker & Under 30 Tickets for just $15!

🎭 An arts worker is someone for whom the majority of their income comes from their artistic work; or someone who is an early career artist working at establishing their career. This deal also applies for anyone under the age of thirty and to arts workers of any age.

🎈About BEASTS OF BURDEN: Experience the World Wars through the eyes of the Canadian animals who lived it themselves; Winnie, the bear named after Winnipeg who inspired Winnie-the-Pooh; a rabble-rousing goat named Sergeant Bill; Gander, a Newfoundland dog chasing redemption; and Bonfire and Bonneau, the dutiful horse and dog of Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. The intricacies of human wars may be unclear to them, but love, loyalty, and loss break through the boundaries of species.

Kydra Ryan plays Bonneau, John McCrae’s canine companion. Where Bonneau came from and where he went remains mysterious with conflicting reports. What is certain is this French Spaniel was a friend and comfort to everyone at Number 3 Canadian General Hospital in France. Bonneau gravitated towards McCrae and they became the best of friends. Kydra Ryan is AlvegoRoot’s Associate Artistic Director. Favourite recent roles include Freya in London Fog and Sylvia in Slate Sisters.

Jeff Culbert plays Bonfire, John McCrae’s loyal horse who was a source of comfort as McCrae grew ill in France. Jeff also plays Sergeant Bill, the goat from Broadview Saskatchewan, who loved to drink b**r, ate the company roll and saved several soldiers from a mortar shell. We are very excited to have Jeff, a pillar of London theatre, return to AlvegoRoot. Past collaborations with AlvegoRoot include producing Jeff’s plays Chicken Feather and Running Rude.
