Wedding #699.

699 isn’t really a monumental number… 700 will probably get the fancy post.

But this one feels a little different.

Tonight I’m back in the place I called home from my earliest memories right up until the day I packed up and headed out into the real world.

This is where a lot of who I am was built.

I started doing what I do in a hall here that’s since been replaced by this beautiful new one. The building may have changed, but the things that made this place special haven’t.

The small-town feel is still here.
The community pride is still here.
And that feeling that everybody somehow knows everybody or at least knows your parents, grandparents, cousins and probably something embarrassing you did in 1993 is definitely still here.

Funny how life works. You leave home, build a career, play hundreds of weddings in halls and venues all over the place… and every once in a while, the road brings you right back to where it all started.

Wedding #699… back home.

Not a milestone by number.

But maybe a little bit of one for me.

Tonight’s office: somewhere out in the country!

Today’s event has me at a brand-new rural venue, and this place is pretty awesome — a huge tent, a beautiful ceremony space, and a firepit/second bar area ready for later tonight.

One of the things I love about having an arsenal of gear is being able to build the setup around the venue instead of trying to make the venue work around the DJ.

Ceremony: I dug into the gear and put together a completely battery-powered sound system. No outlets. No extension cords. No problem.

Main event: The big setup is inside the tent handling the dance floor.

Firepit & second bar: A completely wireless battery-powered speaker is time-delayed to the main system, keeping the music flowing right out into the outdoor area without that weird echo you get from speakers playing at different distances.

And, as always, the full battery-powered lighting setup is spread throughout the venue — tasteful atmosphere while everyone eats and visits, then ready to bring the party when the sun goes down.

Three separate areas. Music everywhere. Lighting everywhere. Very few cords anywhere.

Sometimes being a DJ is about picking the right song.

Other times it’s figuring out how to turn a field into a nightclub.

Tonight we’re breaking out the BIG setup for Robin’s DJ Service. 🔊💥

One of the biggest advantages of having an absolute arsenal of sound, lighting and backup gear is that I don’t have to worry about whether a venue is too big, too small, too wide, too long or just plain weird.

I worry about how many people I need to entertain — not how many pieces of gear I brought.

Every event is different. I look at the room, the crowd and what the night needs, then put together the system that works. Small setup, big setup or the “apparently we’re opening a nightclub tonight” setup. 😂

And before the big rig even gets rolling tonight, the battery ceremony system was once again absolutely flawless for an amazing ceremony location down by the river. No power nearby. No extension cords running through the wilderness. Just clean sound in a beautiful location and zero worries. 🔋🎤🌲

Ceremony by the river ➡️ big venue party tonight.

After doing this for a lot of years, I’ve learned you can never have too much gear… you just need a bigger vehicle to haul it all. 😂

Last night’s DJ job came with a whole new set of challenges but that’s part of the fun!

I actually did a little test setup in the garage beforehand to figure out exactly what gear would work best with the space I was given. One of the advantages of having a pretty extensive collection of sound and lighting gear is being able to build the setup around the venue instead of expecting the venue to work around me.

Some might have looked at last night and seen a difficult setup. I saw something a little different a couple with so many friends and family who love and support them that they almost couldn’t fit everyone into the venue. That’s a pretty great problem to have!

My job was simple: figure out the space, make it work, and bring the party for an awesome group of people.

And yes… this post is a little late because once again I found myself working somewhere with basically no cell service.

Just another reminder why Robin’s DJ Service doesn’t depend on streaming. My lifetime collection of music is constantly updated and downloaded locally, so whether I have full 5G or absolutely nothing…

The music keeps playing. The lights keep moving. And the party keeps going.

Another great night in the books for Robin’s DJ Service!

Tonight’s venue is loooooong and narrow… and of course, I’m set up at one end.

No problem. Throw a wireless time-delayed speaker at the other end and now the speeches sound great throughout the whole room — instead of Grandma hearing the punchline three seconds after everyone else.

Ceremony? Flawless as usual. Battery-powered sound, wireless mics, no extension-cord circus… just good music and tons of good vibes.

And apparently uplights absolutely POP in a barn. Who knew?!

Different venue. Different challenges. Same goal: make it sound good everywhere and keep the party rolling.

This is what it takes to make sure your wedding or event runs without a hitch.

Most people see the lights, hear the music, and think it’s just a couple of speakers and a laptop. The reality? Every inch of the SUV is packed like a giant game of Tetris.

Loaded and ready with:
• QSC KC12 column speakers
• QSC KS118 subwoofer
• Battery-powered QSC CB10 speakers for ceremonies and backup
• ProX DJ booth
• MacBook Pro
• Rane One DJ controller
• Mackie ProFX10 mixer
• Wolfmix lighting controller
• Shure SLDX wireless microphones
• Xvive wireless microphone systems
• Moving heads, spider wash lights, tube lights, and wireless uplights
• Anker Solix battery backup
• Multiple speaker stand options
• Buckets full of cables, adapters, and backup connectors
• Even a battery-powered fan for those hot summer weddings!

Why all the gear?

Because I believe every wedding deserves professional sound, amazing lighting, and a backup plan for the backup plan. If a microphone fails, I have another. If power disappears, the music can keep playing. If your ceremony is in a field, on a beach, or under a gazebo, battery-powered equipment has it covered.

It’s a lot of work packing, unloading, setting up, tearing down, and packing it all again… but seeing a packed dance floor at the end of the night makes every game of SUV Tetris worth it.

Last night’s setup for a beautiful midsummer wedding!

It was the perfect-sized celebration, and the crowd brought incredible energy to the dance floor all night long. There’s nothing better than seeing guests of all ages singing, dancing, and making memories together.

Thank you for choosing Robin’s DJ Service to be part of your special day. Wishing the happy couple a lifetime of love and happiness!

Before anyone asks… yes, I probably overthink my gear. 😂 But after 25+ years of weddings, I’ve learned that “hope for the best” is not a backup plan.

Today’s wedding is a pretty good example of why.

The ceremony started with a completely battery-powered speaker and wireless microphone system. No extension cords, no hunting for power, and if the electricity decided to take the day off, the ceremony wouldn’t even notice.

Then we moved inside for the reception. My small venue sound system took over, while the dance floor lighting ran completely on battery power. This venue also had a second room, so one of my battery-powered wireless speakers was sent over there to keep the music flowing in that space too.

For music, I never rely on a single device. I carry three identical libraries—my laptop, iPad, and iPhone—all with the same playlists and all stored locally. No streaming. No internet required. If one device quits, another takes over in seconds.

I also bring a pair of battery-powered speakers to every wedding. If anything in my main sound system ever decided to retire mid-song, I’d have music back up before anyone noticed.

A few weeks ago I discovered another unexpected advantage of all this battery-powered gear… power outages. Turns out they’re a lot less exciting when your lights and music just keep right on going. 😂

Some people call it overplanning. I call it making sure the party never stops.
