The Valley Had The Blues!

Fri. May 15th, 2026 saw Blues legends John and Darius McKinley come to the school for a morning workshop with our Gr 9-12 Instrumental Music students and our Gr 10 & 11 Guitar students. We learned about The Blues and how it relates so much to our everyday lives, music and culture. We jammed together and then performed in a concert in the afternoon for the rest of the school!

I am so proud of these students and for their hard work getting ready for this performance. Many of these students were performing for the first time, having just learned how to play in February! They acted professionally, looked and sounded fantastic and were well-received by their audience of their peers!

We are so grateful to the for providing this workshop free of charge to the school and our music students.

Thanks, as well go to all the students who participated and helped out with set-up and tear-down (which was monumental and they were fantastic!), to Mr. Hagen and Hospitality students for providing lunch for our visitors, to Mrs. Karn’s for prepping the cafetorium, to Mrs. Van de Slyke for taking videos, to Mrs. Peets for helping out with anything and everything that was needed(!), to all the teachers and students for being such a great audience and to Ms. High and Mr. Vandendriessche for supporting our ideas and events in the Music Department! It was a great day of experiential learning and fun!

Stay tuned for a post about the - which our Music Students are eligible to attend!

A few of us in the Department decided to start our day with a breakfast and a chance to support one of our local elementary schools through the Tim Horton’s SMILE Cookie campaign!

Get yourself into a Tim Hortons and buy a Smile Cookie this week-on until Sunday, and help your local community, too!

What a great way to start our day! Look at all those smiles!

🙏🙏We are SO grateful!🙏🙏

Thank you you SO much to the Birdtown Jamboree (Cornstock) for their donation of 2 beautiful Yamaha Canada Music guitars (the 2 in the middle front row making the X), to add to our class set of guitars previously donated over the years by Birdtown Jamboree (Cornstock) . To be able to have an instrument for every student wanting to play music is so important and the work that the Birdtown Jamboree does in our region to make this happen is incredible!

Each September, on the first weekend following Labour Day, the 3-day Birdtown Jamboree Festival is held at Homegrown Hideaway . Local bands and solo acts all donate their time and tremendous talent to play all weekend long. There is an amazing silent auction as well as an online Art Guitar auction, where local artists take retired guitars and turn them into wall art masterpieces. When the weekend is done and the funds tallied up, the proceeds then get donated to local Norfolk County children’s and youth music and arts initiatives. The VHSS Music Department has been the very grateful recipient of this generosity numerous times over the years and we cannot be more thankful to all the Birdtown Jamboree (Cornstock) Musicians and Volunteers who give so selflessly! Please consider coming out to this year’s Birdtown Jamboree (Sept. 11-13th). Not only will you have a great time, guaranteed, but you will be giving students like these Valley Heights SS the gift of music!
