I’m not the only one ready for spring! Some of the dahlia tubers are sending out shoots already! Almost all the tubers have gorgeous eyes (Sylvia is one of my last to eye up in the spring), and they over wintered SO WELL.

Choosing dahlias for your dream garden can be very overwhelming - there are so many varieties and colors and forms available. I've created a series to share both here on Instagram and on my blog (link above in bio) I hope can give you some guidance finding your favorite varieties.

If you feel overwhelmed with ALL the different dahlia varieties and don’t know where to start I suggest simply picking your favorite color.

Let's talk COLOR: pecifically yellow 💛

I naturally don't gravitate towards yellow, I usually prefer coral and peach-y dahlias. However there are a few yellow dahlias that I love and cannot recommend enough:

💛Labyrinth, Ferncliff Spice, Graceland (this variety has a bit more orange when the blooms just open), Sawtooth Blossom (exclusive to Sawtooth Farm!), Golden Sceptre, and Mister Frans (has a hint of peach, not a true yellow dahlia).

(I'm on the look out for other more "true" yellow varieties- do you have any favorites?)

Glowing peach and coral blooms sit atop super long stems!! A prolific bloomer and show stopper in the garden and in arrangements. A farm and florist favorite! Blooms are 4" in diameter and despite its delicate appearance this variety holds up very well in the vase.

'Salmon Runner' has the most dreamy and vintage vibe with her bright raspberry blossoms with a dark smoky center and lighter tips. The neon lime center is just *chef's kiss*.

'Golden Scepter'✨

This sweet dahlia is literally the sun in dahlia form! This prolific and vigorous variety churns out an abundance of golden yellow blooms all season long! The 2.5" diameter petite blooms are on long straight stems and are wonderful in mixed bouquets.

I love pairing Golden Scepter with sunflowers and dark red dahlias such as Karma Chocolate and Viking for a bold fall arrangement. This variety also pairs well with pink and coral blooms as well (like Pretty Please and Wizard of Oz). 🌸

Winter. Its time to go away.

This spring has seemed years long hasn't it? I don't think I'm the only one that feels this way am I? Here in north central Alberta we had a few weeks with rain and above normal temperatures - but currently are back down in the -10degC depths of a second winter!

I know there are still many weeks before us gardeners in the north can set out tender annuals and get our dahlia tubers in the ground, but I'm feeling extra impatient.

So, some beautiful dahlia pictures will have to tide us over until then. And another hot cup of coffee.

(Pictured is 'Pretty Please' in late September last season. One of my favorite coral dahlias EVER! I only have a few tubers left of this beauty in my shop!)

Pausing for a moment to admire the beauty of the 'Peaches N' Cream' dahlia.....🤯✨😍

Its no wonder this variety is so highly sought after (even I had to search for a few years to find a tuber!!) The peach and blush tipped petals curve backwards, creating an almost perfect ball shape! This dahlia is a definite favorite here on the farm.

To brighten this cold (-16degC) and grey and its-supposed-to-snow-3" day, I'd love for you to meet 'Graceland' ✨

Graceland was a new addition to my dahlia field last year. It is a sunny gold and orange peony dahlia with bright lime centers and a slight coral hue on its petals. With its long strong stems and dark green foliage, this variety pairs so nicely with dark red or magenta blooms (like 'Arabian Nights' or 'Salmon Runner').

I have tubers available in my shop!
