Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art developed in the 1500s by African and Indigenous slaves in Brazil as a form of self-defence from their oppressors. It is marked by its agile and tricky movements that may be executed anywhere from an upside-down position to a gravity-defying kick. Capoeira develops mental balance and physical conditioning. Grupo Axé Capoeira was created in Recife in 1982 by Mestre Barrão, with headquarter in Vancouver. The group continues to flourish as one of the world’s leading Capoeira organizations in over 20 countries worldwide. Grupo Axé Capoeira is renowned for its promotion of the history, music, art, and culture of Brazil and for its interactive and educational demonstrations

Capoeira is often seen as a martial art disguised as a dance, but in reality it encompasses much more. It is a harmony of forces, that gives power, flexibility, endurance, and self-discovery through an uplifting cultural experience. Capoeira is a positive experience which welcome all types of individuals of all ages, background, and levels, and all play together in mutual cooperation and respect.

GOOD ENERGY TAKES GOOD PEOPLE. 💛

Behind the movement, music, and celebration are community supporters who believe in bringing people together.

Muito Obrigado to .mistress.of.herbs, our Berimbau Sponsor for Batizado 2026!

Their support helped bring not one but TWO incredible masters of capoeira to Kingston. This contribution brought incredible artistry, martial arts strategy and culture of capoeira from across North America to YGK. This contribution is a meaningful difference to this year's celebration.

We're grateful to have The Mistress of Herbs as part of our Kingston community. We use their handmade products, as do our students, we trust their products to keep us in peak health for our best capoeira moves in and outside the roda. Our favorite is the Island Medicine Immunity TIncture 🏝️

Show them some love and check out their instagram, Etsy shop or website→ https://www.themistressofherbs.shop/

CAPOEIRA IS PASSED ON.

For Graduado Baiano, one of the people who helped shape his journey is Mestre Testa—his longtime mentor and an important part of the lineage behind Axé Capoeira Kingston.

With more than three decades in Capoeira, Mestre Testa is a recording artist, leader of Axé Capoeira Victoria, and Canada’s first non-Brazilian Mestre.

His influence reaches far beyond his own students—and you can see part of it in the Capoeira being built here in Kingston today.

This October, we’re proud to welcome Mestre Testa to Batizado 2026 — Volume 2.

One of Mestre Barrão’s first students, Mestre Camara began his Capoeira journey in 1990 and went on to establish and lead Axé Capoeira Arizona in 1999.
More than 30 years of training. And experience passed from one generation to the next.

This October, we’re proud to welcome Mestre Camara to Kingston for the first time for Batizado 2026 — Volume 2.

CAPOEIRA IS MORE THAN MOVEMENT. 🥁

Born in João Pessoa, Brazil, Professor Faisca has been training Capoeira since he was 11—developing not only his game, but a deep connection to its music and percussion.

From teaching our youngest students, ages 3+, to sharing rhythm and Capoeira with adults, he brings an energy everyone can learn from.

And this October, he’s back in Kingston for Volume 2. Welcome back, Professor Faisca!

GET READY TO BE INSPIRED 👀

When Instrutora Mumia first started Capoeira, she was so stiff that her nickname—Mumia, “mummy”—stuck.

She’s come a long way since then. Five trips to Brazil, she has been invited to events internationally. An accomplished dancer, performer and now, the lead instructor in Kerrisdale, Vancouver.

Her story is a reminder that you don’t have to start flexible, coordinated, or experienced to see where Capoeira can take you.

And this October, she’s coming to Kingston for the first time. Welcome Instrutora Mumia to Batizado 2026 — Volume 2.
