Wedding Make Up Artist & Hair Stylist
In North America it is common to find two individuals to be your make up artist and hair stylist, while in Asia it is usually an one man job to be both make up artist and hair stylist. I personally think it doesn’t matter which kind you look for as long as they can make you pretty.
There also two kind of these professionals. One is mobile, where they can provide their service in the location you want and charge according to distance from certain point for transportation. While some only provide their service in their studios. Do look out for this, because it will affect your timeline a lot.
Some make up artist and hair stylist also provide service to stay with you whole day to make sure everything with your make up and hair is in place. Or you can also arrange to have them come by at a arranged time for retouch and change hair style. But, of course, these kinds of service have extra charges.
I’m a huge friend of make up and hair style trial. Especially if you do not usually do heavy make up or do not have a lot of chance to have hair updo. Believe me! You will want to know how you look like before the big day and not be surprised in a bad way.

What’s next???
After you have confirmed the date, ceremony venue, reception venue and catering. Next step is to look back into your vendors’ priority list that I have mentioned in my budget planning post. Like I have said for many times, looking for all vendors at same time will just make you crazy. So, work on it one by one according to your priority.
In most case, for most couples, photographer, cinematographer, make-up artist and hair stylist are usually top 5 items in the list. Today, I will first talk about photographers.
From my experiences for planning weddings in Hong Kong and Canada, there’s actually a lot of photographers for you to choose. So many that you will get confused. Here are a few hits to find a suitable one for yourself:
1) Ask what kind of photo taking style you want?
2) Do you have friend’s wedding photos that you like? If so, ask for their opinions about that photographer they hired and see if s/he provided a satisfying service for them.
3) I do not recommend to book photographer without face to face meeting before the wedding. Because by meeting in person, you will know his personality and communication style better. Since your photographer will need to instruct your bridal party and guests to take good photos, you may want to hire someone who has better communication skills.
4) Don’t hesitate to get quotation and availability from photographers that you like. So you will have a better idea of the price range for hiring a photographer.
5) Most photographers will have packages price for you. Make sure you ask for their add-on service charges, e.g. extra hours, album, etc.

Let’s talk about catering today!
As I have mentioned before, most of the reception venues may have contracted caterers or they may have their own chef. In this case, there is one less thing to research on during your wedding planning. However, if your venue does not include catering service, then you may need to look for your own.
When looking for caterer, I personally recommend to look for those that have already served in your venue before. Below will be a few basic things you may want to make sure before booking a caterer.
1) Ask them details above how they prepare the food. Do they prepared and cooked food in their own kitchen? Or are they allow to do it in your reception venue’s kitchen? 2) Most caterers have very flexible menu, but remember to ask for their vegetarian menu, kid menu and vendor menu. Kid and vendor menus usually have different price then regular adult menu and vegetarian menu.
3) Do they include table set up and linear?
4) When is the due date to let them know the number of guests and their menu choices. (I’m sure most caterers will let you know about this, but just in case if they don’t, remember to ASK)
For western menu, it usually include breads, appetiser, soup, pasta, entree and dessert. Soup and pasta is not MUST items, and most of the weddings I planned usually skipped these two items and guests are still very full.
For Chinese menu it usually have at least 8-12 dishes, which included suckling pig, fish, chicken, seafood, soup, rice, noodle, etc.
Most importantly, make sure you find a caterer that is licensed and serve clean food.

After setting up the budget, first few items I suggest to do research and book is your ceremony venue, reception venue and catering. As I have mentioned before, this is usually the biggest expense in the wedding. Secondly, it has less options then any other wedding items.
Different people have various things they concern about when looking for venue. For example, food quality, view, interior design, menu, bridal room, storage space, cleanness, etc. Some prefer to have the wedding ceremony and reception in the same location; some prefer to have specific food type for reception; some prefer to go with price. It is very hard to find a venue that can perfectly fit all your requirements, so communicate with your partner on what both of you care most.
Advise for booking a venue and caterer is to be aware of hidden costs, such as table upsize, projector and screen rental, audio system, service charge, etc. Ask if there are any restrictions for photo taking, decoration and wedding cake. Make sure everything you need are listed and written in the contract before you sign and pay for deposit.

Wedding budget planning!
There is no set formula for wedding budget planning. Here I will share my suggestions for budget planning.
1) Wedding reception space rental and catering cost are usually the biggest expense for wedding planning. So get a few quotations from different price levels venues and caterers to compare and see what is most affordable for you. Most venue may have contracted caterer, so it is always good to look for venues before caterer to save time researching caterers.
2) Think of what kind of items you may want in your wedding and prioritise it according to how much you care about it. This step will help in the future knowing what you are willing to spend more and what you can give up if budget is limited. List of items that can involve in your wedding as below:
Ceremony venue, reception venue, caterer, photographer, videographer, bride’s make up and hair style, bridesmaid and mom’s make up and hair style, wedding gown, evening dress, tuxedo, bridesmaid dresses, groomsmen suits, bouquet, wedding cake, DJ, Band, MC, entertainment, photobooth, decoration, wedding favour, etc.
3) If you have friends who already married and had scale of wedding that you are expecting to have, ask them how much they spent. (Of course, make sure those friends feel comfortable to share and not push them.)
At this point, no rush to look for information and quotation from other vendors yet. Too much information at one time will only stress you out.

After picking your expected wedding date, the second thing you have to do is to discuss with your fiancé / fiancée what style of wedding you want and how many guests you are hoping to invite. These two factors will affect your budget planning and also help eliminate the options of wedding venues to look at.

Some people may want to set up budget before thinking of number of guests to invite, that’s fine too. In this case, my suggestion is to get quotations from 3-5 venues. But keep in mind, pick those venues that are from different price levels, so you will have a better concept of how to set your budget.

What is the first step to do to plan a wedding?

After announcing the engagement news to family and friends, a lot of couples find out that they start getting all sorts of wedding related information and being overwhelmed. My advise at this point is if you know you are a very organised person, then categorise those information and go through it step by step later. If you are not that great at sorting out information, then stop looking into those things and find a wedding planning guideline or wedding planner to assist you through the wedding planning process.

So, what really you should FIRST do to plan a wedding? LOOK FOR WHICH DATE YOU WANT TO GET MARRIED! This is very important because without a date, you basically cannot book for any things, including venue, photographer, makeup artist, etc. Therefore, pick a few dates out from the calendar and prioritise them before getting to the next steps. The reason to pick a few dates out is because sometime vendors may already booked up by your first choice, so you can react fast and go on to your second choice. If you are not sure if those dates are good, discuss it with family and friends who you do not want them to miss out from your wedding.
