Have you ever had the opportunity to bury your nose in a garden rose? It is the quintessential rose fragrance. These roses are full of character and open into big beautiful, fluffy blooms that are hard to beat.

I have been growing roses in the cut flower beds for 5 years and there have been some real ups and downs with them. I have been able to use them in design work here and there but this is the first season where they are truly hitting maturity and while the weather has been hard on some spring crops, it has been wonderful for the roses.

So, for the first time ever, I am getting to share some bouquets that truly feature roses! These are not long lived flowers in the vase but they are stunning and make any room smell delightful amd truly there just isn't anything quite like them. Check my stories for more pictures.

I have a few on the online store that will be ready for pick up at Amplifed on Wednesday and may have more later this week. You will also find some ranunculus, anemones and a few other spring beauties popped into these bouquets along with spring greenery.

Don't miss the beauties!!!🌹🥀

Whew, we made it through May! I think all parents agree, May just might be the busiest month of the year family wise and its busy in the gardens too. This year we decided to add a puppy into the mix at the beginning of May which added to the chaos but has also been a whole lot of fun.

So much of the month has been sports practices, track meets, making sure everyone is fed, getting everyone healthy from a bad bug and puppy training. Normally May is a big month in the gardens but the early heat wave allowed me to do a lot of May tasks early which was helpful.

The harvests have been trickling in and they always start to become more abundant in June. I love my busy life and I wouldnt change it for the world. I have to say though, I do enjoy my quiet moments in the gardens in the mornings and evenings. June is a busy month too as school and Spring activities wrap up. In the gardens, harvesting picks up, weeding is at a peak and there is still a lot of planting to do.

I had to bring one of the kids for a sports trip in Whistler this weekend and I had a very rare 48 hours of just me. I will be honest, it felt pretty weird and unusual but I had the chance to do some yoga, run, bike, eat some good food, shop and recharge for the final push of the school year. It's hard for me to not be productive but I have also learned over the years, some down time and time to recharge is pretty important.

Hope you all had a good weekend. June will bring much more colour to the feed!

I am definitely grieving right now...I should be harvesting buckets of big, fluffy, perfect ranunculus right now and I am not. My whole first planting, which is also my biggest, was wiped out by a fungal disease 😭. Luckily my smaller second planting survived but the early heat wave knocked them back. They are starting to bloom so there will be ranunculus but not like usual. Its a tough one because ranunculus just might be my favourite crop and to be honest this spring has been hard on all the spring flowers, but its also given the heat loving flowers a fantastic start.

Luckily, many of my peony plants have now reached maturity and are pumping out the blooms! The irises have also been highly productive and after a mild winter my garden roses are looking like they are going to have an absolute bumper crop!! For the first time ever, I might be able to offer some garden roses bunches which would honestly be amazing because they really are something special! We shall see how the next week goes.

So, it really is a Spring to celebrate the perennial gardens and the beauty and reliability they have to offer. While I think I have decided to not grow field tulips next year, ranunculus corms are already ordered and I am sure they will be back in full force next season!

Woodland Inspired Bouquets.

There is a little sweet spot of time.in the gardens when the annuals are not yet blooming but the spring perennials are having a moment and this is it. I picked the first round of peonies over the last week and the bearded irises (one of the most underrated cut flowers in my opinion) are about to put on a show. These bouquets have a lot of green freshness but they also have some many delicate elements that really add charm. Give them a couple days in the vase and the peonies and irises will burst open and it will be quite a show!

I had just a couple extra of these after I finished making subscription bouquets, so if you would like one, grab one on the online store and pick it up at Amplified tomorrow (Tuesday).

Yesterday the kids ans I were busy planting, planting, planting, feels good to have most of the garden beds filled now.

Hope you all had a good weekend and are ready for a short week!

Well the rain could not have come at a better time this week!! Had we continued to have the temperatures we had been having and no access to water, I am really not sure how the gardens would have faired. Its also been nice to see the grass in the grasslands beyond our fence greening up since that soaking as well as they were already starting to brown 😬. So nice to have gentle rain falling again as I write this post, hoping it continues all day.
With the water issues this week, the kids got 2 extra days at home with the new puppy, so nobody was too sad about that!
It's the time of year in the gardens that I struggle with a bit, trying to get new transplants in and settled with everchanging weather conditions and cutworms (while they are around they don't seem too bad this year 🤞). Some things are striving and some things are taking their time. I am hoping to get a lot more transplanted and direct seeded over the next couple of days.
The perennial gardens are flourishing and to be honest I have missed picking some things that I wasn't expecting to bloom so early, it is always hard to keep up with harvesting when I am prepping and planting at the same time. Having said that the first round of peonies and irises have been coming in hot all week so I am making subscription bouquets this weekend and will probably have a few extra bouquets for next week. I will post once I know how many extras I will have!
For now catching up on some inside chores that have been neglected for a couple weeks and having an extra cup of coffee as it has been some very early morning training sessions with Wren all week 🥴, and then it will be onto garden work and track and roller ski practices with the kids, and a whole lot of puppy time!!
Enjoy your long weekend everyone!

Welcome to the family sweet little Wren! We were all heartbroken last winter when we lost our wonderful boy Arlo to epilepsy. When we made the decision to get another dog we knew we wanted to get another Springer as Arlo truly made us love the breed.

We were very lucky to find Springers of Green Gables and their wonderful dogs. One of their Mama's, Raven, especially captured us and long story short, the cards played out in our favour and we were able to adopt one of her darling puppies.

While there is no doubt she has big paws to fill, we are smitten already and it feels so good to have a dog in the house and garden again. Looking forward to many adventures with our little Wrenny Penny ❤️

Get ready for lots of puppy pictures...😬😊

Spring "wildflowers". Spring is the time for whimsical bouquets. As the season goes on the flowers get bigger and bolder and the greenery becomes less and less but in Spring its all about green, pastels, purple and bits and bobs of this and that from the perrenial gardens.

I stopped doing Mother's Bouquets a few years ago because Mother's day is almost always a week or two before the gardens burst and its such a busy time of year. However, with the crazy heat we have had I have more flowers in the perrenials beds than I have ever had this early in the season 😳.

I did a few special orders for this weekend and Spring Subscribers will be hearing from me this weekend as well about moving up the date of the next bouquet as I do have peonies and irises about to pop!

It looks like next week, temperatures will become more seasonal and we might get some rain which we desperately need. I think all of the plants could use a reprieve from the heat so they can really settle in and root well.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend, no matter how you spend it!

It's been a hot minute since I did an intro on here so...

I started Little Blue Barn in 2017 on my second mat leave. I statred growing mostly veggies and a few flowers but have evolved over the years moving mostly to flowers. This year the kids have taken over some of the beds for veggies again which I am excited about! I might be the main face behind the barn but I have been extremely lucky to have alot of support in this endeavor from my husband, kids and parents and none of this would have been possible without them.

The flowers are my side gig, I am actually a pediatric Occupational Therapist and have had the honour of working with children and their families in our community for the last 15 years.

My pride and joy are my kids - I absolutely love being a mom and spending as much time with them as they will let me. We love to hike, bike, paddle and snowboard as a family as well as spend time out in the gardens together and in our pool.

Sports were a huge part of my life growing up and I am loving getting back into them with my kids. I have been working on my NCCP certification as a coach for nordic skiing and biathlon and am learning to be a track umpire too. I started running and skiing with my kids a few years ago and now do a few races myself each year.

Outside of that, I love to be in my kitchen. Cooking , baking, preserving food - I love it all. I also love to eat - I have celiac disease and some other food allergies, which have lead me down a path of lifelong learning about nutrition and learning to make delicious and satisfying meals with the foods I can eat but also grow.

I am also a huge animal lover - I showed cattle growing up and spent every minute I could on my grandparents cattle ranch. While my own adult path has lead me to more horticulture than livestock husbandry, we always have a backyard flock and pets who bring me a lot of joy.

As you can see, I hate sitting still 🙈 so if I am not doing any of the above, I am probably crocheting and shedding tears watching a good drama, riding my bike or just sitting outside with my husband enjoying the life we have built with a nice glass of wine.

Me in a nutshell 😊

Oh Tulips...

I planted my first tulip crop for production in the fall of 2018. Since then I have grown them in the field, inside in winter, and under tunnels in the field. For the first few years they were a very reliable crop for me. The last couple of years have been trouble...

This year, one of my indoor varieties had tulip fire (bad fungal disease that comes on the bulbs). I planted my field tulips outline the field with no cover last fall. We got a lot of rain after planting which was great for the tulips but then a warm, dry winter, has created shorter tulips and in one of my double varieties I have a lot of blind plants (good green growth but a deformed flower). I also seem to have disease in one variety.

I have to say the issues I have experienced tend to be in the newer hybrid varieties and doubles. My tried and true varieties seem to be pushing through despite conditions.

I actually order my tulips for next year now, so I am really thinking about whether I should grow them for next year and if I do, what varieties. I have decided from some experimentation that growing under cover in the field does seem to make a difference too.

For now I will enjoy my successful varieties and Spring subscribers will get to enjoy them too this week.

How do you all feel about tulips???
