To say I’m sad is an understatement.
I have been looking for a studio like this for over a decade and now that I have it, I have to let it go.
Most of you know that health concerns have been a constant for me but that I’ve found ways to manoeuvre the business around them almost every time.
Health aside, this economy is killer. It’s brutal as a homeowner, taxpayer, parent and especially as a small business owner.
This is why I’ve decided to call it. I’m leaving the studio this month.
Retail orders are slim and not enough to keep us afloat. If I had more capital I would push on but I don’t. Flowers have always been a luxury and I can’t blame anyone for choosing to spend their money on what can sustain them while the world braces itself after each trauma.
Flowers weren’t just my passion, they were what allowed me the space and flexibility to be a disabled mom. During Covid when Harry lost his job, flowers saved us, they paid our mortgage and kept us feeling hopeful during a time of grief and uncertainty.
Now our family is approaching a new chapter. Our lower sales meant that Harry had to find new work and he has. His new position is perfect for him and he is thriving. Unfortunately without a second set of hands, I can’t do things on my own. I’ve tried, really hard! I’m heartbroken saying goodbye to what has been my personality for the past 17yrs.
This doesn’t mean it’s totally over. We have weddings this summer we are so excited about, and we aren’t saying no to any new inquiries either.
The point I’m trying to make, in the most verbose way, is that retail just doesn’t fit for us, no matter how we try to do it.
We are moving things back into our home to keep more of our profits and we are being a bit more selective with jobs we take on. We will always point you in the right direction if we aren’t the right florist for your job though! After this much time, I know so many talented designers I am more than happy to send you their way.
What’s next for me? Well… this summer I am healing, taking care of my kids, painting my porch and getting ready to …. Go back to school. 😳
That’s my news for now.
