In addition to major Canadian cities, Mr. J's very grateful to have performed in so many beautiful, often remote locations: from northernmost Newfoundland (Canada Day 2014 & 2015, in La Scie, and King's Point), to Whitehorse, Yukon (at the 2016 Sourdough Festival along with beloved fiddling legend Natalie MacMaster). J loves our beautiful country of Canada, and all the truly amazing people who live here. A life goal is to see every inch of our great nation, and to perform Magic in all the big places- and especially the little places- where no one has ever seen Magic shows before. You personally may have already seen The Amazing Mr. J on one of his many TV guest appearances over years. There will be more! You can read Mr. J's first published story, part of an international #1 Bestselling book! After facing The Dragons on CBC TV's Dragons' Den years ago, he luckily scored a deal with Kevin O'Leary! Kevin published Mr. J as part of his #1 international bestseller: “Cold Hard Truth on Family, Kids & Money”. A great book- you can check out Mr. J on pages 123-133. You may be curious to know that in spite of his TV persona, in real life (with my dealings with him on the phone, and in person) Kevin is a very fun, amiable guy- like an Uncle! A Magical experience. 'Mr. J's Origin story'- how did it begin? When Mr. J’s wonderful MOM & DAD bought him a wonderful little Magic Kit for his 5th birthday, he became hooked, performing his first ‘shows’ for parents right out of the box. When turning six, a second Magic Kit turned into a little show for all the guests at his grandparents house in Saint John, New Brunswick... sparking a lifelong love of performing. (So, parents, it's always good to encourage that stuff in your children!) A few years later, those same perfect parents hired some magicians to perform at his house, forever expanding little Mr. J’s imagination. (Again, always a good idea, parents...you never know what long-lasting influence such a childhood experience can give your child!)
Initially inspired by famous Canadian children's entertainer Mr. Dressup, Mr. J also credits Stan Lee, Dr. Seuss, Santa Claus, Mr. T, Michael Landon, and Charles Schulz as role models. A personal Magic mentor is Nova Scotia's own world-renowned talent Mike Robinson...the best around! After working as a professional radio DJ, studying French and Honours English, followed by a brief school teaching career, Mr. J took a break to attend Circus School in Toronto, where he also studied Magic at Browser's Den (with super-cool owner Jeff Pinsky). After performing his first public Magic Shows in Toronto in 1999, then returning to NS in 2000, he then performed every day for two months over Christmas, at Dartmouth's Mic Mac Mall, where the fire was truly lit...performing for large crowds. As you can imagine, performing all day right beside Santa Claus and Woody the Talking Christmas Tree (!), showed Mr. J firsthand the widespread joy Magic can bring. With requests for Magic Shows on weekends, while still working as a schoolteacher, Mr. J used Magic tricks as a fun motivator for his classroom students. He found he could actually incorporate Magic directly into his lessons each year, whether teaching French, Science, or even High School European History. Amazing kids, wonderful memories. However, following some school Magic workshops, the demand for actual Magic Shows at events while he was still teaching became so great, that Mr. J finally retired from teaching for good in 2005, to travel and perform Magic professionally full-time. Inspired by the wonderful reactions from kids, teens, and adults, David Jolly continues to try and share this joy and excitement with as many people as possible! A life-changing encounter with the real life Dr. Patch Adams (as portrayed by Robin Williams in the 1998 movie) reinforced the need for spreading cheer and helping people. Everyone struggles, everyone makes mistakes and has had tragedy in their life...Patch himself mentioned he dealt with severe depression and personal setbacks...so as a result, he emphasized that sharing happiness is a revolutionary act. An amazing human being, and his books are get Mr. J's highest possible recommendation. Love is a choice, and Patch made Mr. J choose to always be Jolly! Today, Mr. J shares his time between multiple residences in Halifax, Truro, and North Sydney. By day, Mr. J is a Magician, Writer, and Bon Vivant. By night, he is also those things. That’s because he’s that good kind of workaholic: a goal-setting, practical dreamer. J speaks French, and loves Canada, cooking, nature, the outdoors, yoga, meditation, daily exercise, healthy eating, books, green living, hiking, sports, writing, poetry, film, romance, the arts, CBC Radio, singing, playing guitar and piano, skydiving, new ideas, random adventures, traveling, board games, Magic (of course), plus virtually all music, and literature. (Secret confession: Mr. J loves hosting retro parties!)
Mr. J loves children, and is writing an original children’s book, hoping to make it into a series. A couple books for adults are also in the works. (Keep watching your local bookstore!)
Mr. J is cosmopolitan and urbane, and (let’s face it), rather silly too. (By the way, Mr. J never goes around talking about himself in the third person like this. That’s just an understood pretense when writing overly long pretentious mini-bios like this...) :P
