NEW CLASS!

This one was a long time coming, but we're very happy to announce our first sewing program at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre.

This is an introductory sewing course for people who would like to learn more foundational sewing techniques for apparel and soft goods. Over the six week course participants will sew a small zippered pouch, a lined tote bag, and work on a simple alteration project of their choice.

Through the mini projects they will learn the following techniques:

● Sewing an exposed zipper
● Finishing edges with binding
● Clipping, grading, and pressing techniques
● Sewing facings and linings and more!

All of the materials for the pouch and tote bag will be provided, they will need to bring their own simple alteration project.

Sewing machines and tools are available, however, participants are encouraged to bring their own sewing kit.

Recommended sewing tools include:

● Seam ripper
● Snips
● Fabric scissors
● Hand sewing needles
● Chalk, wax or fabric marking pen
● Ruler
● Measuring tape
● Straight pins
● Universal sewing machine needles
● Iron

We’re doing the darker months differently this year: think shadow work, but make it cozy and communal. This is a six week therapist-led group for creatives, neurodivergent folks, and tender-hearted humans who know or suspect they’ve experienced Seasonal Affective Disorder. Winter is a reflective time. Instead of fighting a natural pull inward, we’ll lean into it to explore our inner worlds. We’ll face the truths the dark months bring and discover what they’re here to teach us. Blankets, tea, and creative materials provided! Expect gentle nervous system practices, guided parts and shadow work, expressive arts therapy, and connection and community.

This winter our friend Brittany McQuinn will be offering a unique therapy group this winter here at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. Brittany will host SAD Together: Group Therapy for Seasonal Affective Disorder on Saturday mornings January 10 - February 14.

Last week we hosted a gathering of local artists and arts organization as part of Tourism, Heritage and Culture's current initiative to collaborate on concrete ideas that will inform the renewal of the province's cultural action plan.

Organized by Portfolio, a Moncton based strategic action company, the session held at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre on August 18 helped to facilitate valuable conversations among our peers in the arts sector. It was so nice for so many of us to have an excuse to come together and chat about shared issues and concerns and to learn what each other are up to creatively.

With this in mind, we have decided to keep these conversations going through a new quarterly initiative we're calling the Community Arts Huddle. Open to all artists, arts organizations, galleries and other stakeholders in the arts community, our first get together will take place on Friday October 10, 9-11 a.m.

Registration is required: https://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/ticketing/community-arts-huddle

A Guide to Sending Mail by Tara Hammond

Do you miss the days of getting more in your mailbox than just bills and fliers? Remember when we used to write letters? Maybe you. Maybe you don't. Either way, Tara's A Guide to Sending Mail is a beautiful colour zine about just what the title suggests.

This zine includes information on how to find penpals, what to write about, what to send, how to fold letters and address envelopes, even some basic postal rates! It's a great collection of encouragement and letter writing inspiration.

_________

Zine of the Week is a supporting feature of the Fredericton Zine Library located on the first floor of the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. If you’re a zine maker, get in touch. We’d love to include your zine in our library and/or a future post in this series.
