Today is a day of remembering and deep dedication to those who fought—and continue to fight—for the lives we are able to live here in Canada. We pause to honour the courage, sacrifice, and enduring strength of the men and women who served, knowing that the freedom, safety, and community we experience today were not given lightly.
The poppy stands as our symbol of remembrance because it grew across the battle-scarred fields of the First World War, especially in Flanders. When little else could survive the devastation, the poppies bloomed—fragile yet resilient—becoming a living reminder of the lives lost and the hope that endured. Inspired by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae’s poem In Flanders Fields, the poppy became a symbol of memory, gratitude, and the promise to never forget the cost of peace.
Today, we wear the poppy close to our hearts not just as a tradition, but as a commitment: to honour those who served, to acknowledge the sacrifices made, and to carry their legacy forward with respect
