BHM Day 5
Long Black wedding receptions aren’t random.
They’re rooted in tradition.
Across West Africa and the Caribbean, celebrations were never meant to fit into a few hours. Weddings and major life events often lasted days, with drumming, dancing, storytelling, and food served in rounds. The gathering continued until the rituals were complete, not until a clock said stop.
During slavery in North America, community gatherings were rare and heavily restricted. So when people were finally able to come together, celebrations stretched late into the night. Joy wasn’t guaranteed again soon.
After emancipation, these long celebrations remained part of Black culture.
Elders used these moments to speak blessings, wisdom, and generational history into marriages well into the early morning hours. It was never just a party. It was community, legacy, and connection.
So when Black wedding receptions run long, it isn’t poor planning.
It’s culture continuing forward.
And that deserves to be honoured, not rushed.
