Let’s talk Wedding DJs!
When it comes to weddings, a good DJ makes a great investment in your special day. There are a lot of moving parts to a wedding and a seasoned DJ knows how to navigate them.
A beautiful wedding starts long before the big day. It requires hours of planning, coordinating, and your vendors working together to bring the best possible outcome.
There are announcements, dinner, toasts, timelines, schedules and once-in-a-lifetime moments that need to be timed nearly to the second, with no chance for a do-over.
The DJ is absolutely “more than music”. We work on the fly, adapt to hiccups and keep the night flowing smoothly from grand entrance to last call (and more often then not, long before and after)
There are multitudes of behind-the-scenes moments we as DJs take care of that no one notices as well. With all of the technology that exists today comes one big caveat: technology can fail. A professional DJ is always ready for something catastrophic to happen at the worst time, and have a plan (or 3) in place should it happen. Backup equipment is imperative to a successful event. Brand new electronics can absolutely fail.
Imagine this: it’s the first dance. You’re invited to the dance floor to share with your friends and family, one of the most memorable moments of your life, and boom! The DJs laptop freezes! We’ve all been there, needing to reboot a computer because it was temperamental. There’s just no time for that to happen at such a critical moment! Not to worry, your DJ was prepared, and has that song on another device, ready to play on a moment’s notice. Disaster averted, you didn’t even know there was a problem! This is the kind of redundancy and quick thinking that professional wedding DJs bring to the table every single day.
One of those things often overlooked can also be insurance. Make sure your DJ carries insurance. Many venues require your vendors to carry a certain level of liability insurance. This protects you, the venue, and your vendors!
Lastly, make sure your booking includes a clear, well-written contract. This should almost be point number one! A contract should clearly outline things like payments, dates and times. It should also outline any requirements they may have (available electricity, shelter for outdoor events, etc). This way there’s nothing left ambiguous. No surprises.
In conclusion, I’m certainly not giving the advice that you should absolutely hire the most expensive DJ you can find, nor the cheapest, but here’s a few key points to ask a DJ when you’re looking to book:
1. How long have you been DJing weddings?
2. How do you handle planning our day with us?
3. Have you ever had a major issue, and how did you handle it?
4. Do you have backup equipment in case something goes wrong?
5. Do you carry liability insurance?
6. Do you require a contract?
